This is one of the big first-round matches from the 2020 US Open. It features South Africa’s Kevin Anderson as the underdog against the much-fancied Zverev.

But with some shaky Grand Slam performances behind him, this may not be the most comfortable of openers for the German.

If Anderson is fit and sharp after having had knee surgery again this year, then the big-server is a threat.

Kevin Anderson Preview – Is Anderson sharp enough to beat Zverev?

It was only back in 2017 that Kevin Anderson had his best ever effort at the US Open when he reached the final.

He wasn’t successful on the day but it was a big breakthrough, that being the first Slam final of his career actually.

He did reach the Wimbledon final in 2018 as well, but lost that. 2019 was a season of struggles for Anderson because of injury issues.

He has another knee surgery in February this year after falling in the second round of the Australian Open.

But there has been plenty of time for recovery and haven’t really lost anything with the ATP Tour having been out of action for most of the year.

So other players haven’t really had the chance to get much of a jump on him.

In his last five appearances at the US Open, Anderson has not gone out before the third round.

Even though he is the 12/5 underdog here, he will have some support to pull off an upset* (odds taken 17:20 GMT, Sunday 30th August)

Especially so if he gets his powerful serve working quickly in the match. Anderson fell in the second-round to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Western & Southern Open last week.

We feel that in order for a victory to happen for the South African, he’s going to need to do it quickly.

The longer the match wears on, the bigger the advantage will be to the much younger Zverev.

Alexander Zverev Preview – Can Zverev maintain record against Anderson?

Five times before Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson have met and those matches have all gone the way of the German.

Zverev is currently ranked 7th in the world and is one of the front runners for the title in New York.

The 23 year old has not really lived up to his billing in past Grand Slam appearances.

However, there was a big step forward from him this year as he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Zverev was in action at the Western & Southern Open last week where he was stopped by Andy Murray.

That was a three-set contest and Zverev looked to be cruising to the win in the decider, but then lost all of his focus on his serve to allow Murray to pounce back and grab an unlikely win.

Alexander Zverev reached the fourth round of the US Open last year, the best he has managed yet at the tournament.

The last meeting that he had with Anderson was back in 2018, so it’s been a while. Zverev won that match on a tie-break.

The German will be hoping for much more comfortable progress through this tough opener at Flushing Meadows, he’ll need to keep as much in the bank for the second week of action if possible.

Kevin Anderson vs Alexander Zverev Betting Advice

Zverev should outlast Anderson again. Both of them are going to have benefitted from a bit of match time last week.

When you break it down, Zverev should have won his match against Murray last week on the blue courts, but he should be back stronger and sharper for the experience.
