In her first tournament of the new year, Kiki Bertens should have been pleased with her efforts at the Brisbane International. She fought past rising star Dayana Yastremska in the first round, then battled past another tough challenger in Anett Kontaveit in the second round.
Bertens then took fourth seed Naomi Osaka to a decider in the quarter-finals. Overall the tournament was a good workout for Bertens as all three matches of hers went to a decider. So that’s been plenty of game time. Bertens bowed out in the second round of Adelaide twelve months ago.

Greek player Maria Sakkari got a rough draw at the Brisbane International last week. She was up against tournament favourite Naomi Osaka in the first round and subsequently bowed out.
That having been said, having been demolished in the first set, Sakkari showed tremendous fight in winning a second-set tie break to keep herself in the match. She expended herself there though and was no match for Osaka in the third.
So ahead of the Australian Open, the 24 year old is going to be looking for a run in Adelaide. There was really little form from her since the Western & Southern Open in August last year.
