English Premier League
Pick: Over 2.5 Goals
Odds: 4/6

Preview: These sides put on quite the show the last time they met, despite serving up just the one goal between them in a 1-0 Leeds victory back in November. Everton will be seeking revenge then, as well as their fourth straight away win in the Premier League, when the teams reconvene at Elland Road.

Leeds – Whites patchy at Elland Road?

The last newly-promoted side to have more Premier League wins after their first 20 matches than Leeds (W9 D2 L9), with nine, were Wigan in 2005-06. That is testament to the outstanding work Marcelo Bielsa has done in quickly getting his team acclimatised to their new surroundings. Meanwhile, a repeat of their slender victory at Goodison Park back in November would see them bring up double figures on Wednesday.

Leeds brought up win number nine with a typically swashbuckling display, going toe-to-toe with a Leicester side who would have climbed into second with three points. Instead it was Patrick Bamford who inspired The Whites to their second league win in as many games, complementing a goal with two assists at the King Power Stadium to take his tally for the season to 11 goals – four fewer than leading scorer Mo Salah.

That success followed shortly after last week’s 2-1 victory at St James’ Park against Newcastle, who have since beaten Everton on Merseyside. Leeds return to Elland Road for this latest outing no doubt keen to better a record of three wins in nine (W3 D2 L4) on their own patch this season. However, they were beaten 1-0 by Brighton in their last such outing, in what was arguably their poorest display thus far.

Everton – Toffees thriving away from Merseyside?

The top-four looked a real possibility at the end of December, after collecting 13 of a possible 15 points whilst seeing out the year with four straight victories. But their hopes of joining Europe’s premier club competition have been dealt several setbacks already in 2021. Saturday’s 2-0 home loss to Newcastle, who had lost five on the spin and were without a league win in nine beforehand, providing the latest of those.

Carlo Ancelotti described the latest no show from his side as ‘lazy and slow’ as Everton (W10 D3 L6), who would have moved within a point of near neighbours Liverpool with a win, failed to secure maximum points for the third fixture in four (W1 D1 L2) since the turn of the year. Somehow the Italian must wake his side from their slumber, particularly with trips to Old Trafford and Anfield to come before the end of February.

Fortunately, the Toffees are excelling on their travels, going the last five away matches in the competition without defeat. Four were victories, including each of the past three against Leicester, Sheffield United and Wolves. The last time they recorded four consecutive away wins in the top-flight was 1985. Conversely, they have managed one win in 37 attempts (W1 D9 L27) as the away side in this fixture.

Leeds Vs Everton Betting Advice

If the history of this fixture does indeed hold up, with Leeds losing one of 37 top-flight meetings here in West Yorkshire, then Everton could soon find themselves on the wrong end of a league double, having lost 1-0 at Goodison Park when these sides clashed in November. The latter contest was more fondly remembered for its pulsating nature, as both teams unleashed a barrage of shots (38 in total).

Leeds Vs Everton – Key Facts

  • Across their nine Premier League home games this term, Leeds have averaged 1.44 goals but scored four or more in two of their three victories at Elland Road.
  • Unbeaten in their last five Premier League away games having won each of the last three, Everton are bidding to record four successive top-flight away wins for the first time since 1985.
  • After winning 1-0 at Goodison Park earlier in the season, Leeds, who have lost one of 37 top-flight meetings at home (W27 D9 L1), can complete their first league double over Everton since 1990-91.

Another end-to-end encounter seems likely considering Leeds’ last two fixtures have been just that, while Everton arrive at Elland Road seeking their fourth successive away victory so shouldn’t be wanting for confidence or belief despite losing last time out at home to Newcastle. I predicted goals first time around and was left feeling aggrieved, however, I am steadfast in my belief that these teams can put on a show.
