Preview: Elland Road will host Manchester United in a Premier League encounter in front of a capacity crowd for the first time in eighteen years, since a 1-0 loss for Leeds in October 2003. Having lost heavily at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture, can Marcelo Bielsa’s charges deliver a triumphant riposte in West Yorkshire?

Leeds – Whites must overcome Big Six inferiority complex?

Since the start of last season, when the club finally returned to the Premier League after 16 years spent in the English football league wilderness, Leeds have faced the traditional ‘Big Six’ of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City and Tottenham on 18 occasions. Their record reads two wins (vs Man City and Tottenham), five draws and eleven losses. Losing all six such matches in 2021-22 by an aggregate of 5-24.

So the Whites will have to step it up considerably should they even go close to securing what is, in the eyes of their supporters at least, a victory coveted more than any other: one against bitter rivals Man Utd. Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently in the midst of a three game winless spell (D1 L2), though. Having just turned in arguably their poorest collective display of the season in the 3-0 away loss against Everton.

Key Stat: Leeds have only beaten three teams at Elland Road in the Premier League this season, giving them an overall record at home in 2021-22 of W3 D4 L4. However, none of the sides to have lost there – Burnley, Crystal Palace and Watford – are currently higher than 13th in the standings.

Manchester United – Red Devils don’t misfire on the road?

Since that now-infamous 4-1 loss at Vicarage Road in November, thrashed by a Watford side which hasn’t won any of eleven subsequent league games, Manchester United have gone unbeaten in six successive Premier League away games (W2 D4). Moreover, they are the only team in the division to score in every away league game so far this season, doing so in each of their last fourteen such fixtures in the competition.

Breaching a Leeds backline that has shipped more league goals (46) in 2021-22 than all bar Norwich City, including 26 in the nine games since last recording a clean sheet, shouldn’t prove too taxing therefore. United tails will be up after last Tuesday’s hard-fought 2-0 victory over Brighton that stretched the Red Devils unbeaten league run to six (W3 D3). Although it is just one win from their last four on the road.

Key Stat: Bruno Fernandes concluded the scoring in last Tuesday’s 2-0 home win vs Brighton and boasts a fine record against Sunday’s opponents Leeds, contributing six goals in just three appearances (5 goals, 1 assist). This includes a hat-trick in a 5-1 victory at Old Trafford when the sides met on the opening weekend of the season.

Leeds Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Prior to last season’s goalless draw at Elland Road, there hadn’t been a 0-0 scoreline between the teams in 22 league and cup encounters. It was possibly no coincidence that a first scoreless affair for more than 25 years came in a game played without fans in attendance. Man Utd did win 6-2 at Old Trafford earlier in that same season, though, which they followed up with a 5-1 trouncing at the same venue last August.

Leeds Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • After suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat at Old Trafford on the opening weekend, Leeds have now won only one of their last 16 Premier League games against Manchester United (D5 L10).
  • Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick in that particular game, taking his goal involvements against Leeds to six (5 goals, 1 assist) in just three Premier League meetings.
  • Man Utd both scored and conceded in six of their last seven away league games, four resulting in draws. While seven of the eleven Leeds home games this term saw both teams find the net, four of which were in draws.

There will be some atmosphere inside Elland Road for what is arguably the biggest fixture of the season as far as the Leeds fans are concerned. The hosts have scored in 9 of 11 home league games this term, losing only four (W3 D4). Meanwhile, Man Utd have scored in 14 successive away league games but won only two of the last seven said fixtures (D4 L1), all of which ended with both teams having scored.
