Preview: With only one solitary win across their 13 previous Premier League visits to Leeds United, who are bidding for a third successive win under new coach Jesse Marsch, there could be a sense of impending doom for Southampton as they strive to avoid what would be a fourth league defeat in a row.

Leeds – Can Whites sustain Mar-sch up the table?

Suddenly the club’s decision to replace fan favourite Marcelo Bielsa in the managerial hot seat with Jesse Marsch is looking as though it could pay dividends in the long run. The American didn’t make the sort of positive start to life in South Yorkshire that he had hoped for, losing his first two games to Leicester and Aston Villa, but that only made those dramatic victories against Norwich and Wolves all the more satisfying.

Leeds have now won successive league games for only the second time this season, having last managed three in a row at the end of the previous campaign. Both wins came courtesy of late goals. The Whites can become the first team in Premier League history to win three consecutive games by scoring the winner in the 90th minute or later, though four defeats in their last five at Elland Road suggests it won’t be easy.

Key Stat: No Premier League team is on a longer run of games without registering a clean sheet than Leeds (16), whose last shutout came in a 1-0 home win vs Crystal Palace on 30 November, 2021.

Southampton – Hasenhuttl striving to deter end-of-season slump?

It has been another steady campaign from the Saints under Ralph Hasenhuttl, the Austrian who continues to be linked with a summer move after three-and-a-half years at St Mary’s. However, after three defeats on the bounce in the league and a comprehensive 4-1 loss to Man City which seen them exit the FA Cup at the last eight stage, could we be looking at a disinterested team for what remains of this season?

The warning signs are glaring. In the league, Southampton have lost three successive games for the first time all season. Moreover, all three were against sides no higher than ninth in the standings, going down 4-0 at Aston Villa before back to back 2-1 home defeats to relegation battlers Newcastle and Watford. Conceded multiple times in each loss (8 in total), which is as many as in their nine prior league fixtures.

Key Stat: From mid-October until the end of February, Southampton remained unbeaten at St Mary’s in the Premier League for ten games (W5 D5), but have since lost their last two home fixtures to teams currently 14th (Newcastle) and 18th (Watford) in the table.

Leeds Vs Southampton Betting Advice

Whereas Saturday’s hosts at Elland Road must be ruing the timing of the latest international break, it may have come to the rescue for the Saints who were beginning to unravel after four straight losses in all competitions. There will be concerns that this is a side with nothing tangible worth playing for in what remains of the season, but three points here could be enough to return to the Premier League’s top half.

Leeds Vs Southampton – Key Facts:

  • Armando Broja netted the only goal when these sides met earlier in the season, providing Southampton with the opportunity of completing a first league double over Leeds since 1981-82.
  • However, Leeds boast a formidable record at Elland Road against the Saints, losing only one of 13 Premier League home meetings (W7 D5).
  • There has been at least three goals in seven of the previous eight Leeds home Premier League games, while the hosts are currently enduring the longest wait for a clean sheet at 16 games.

I’m prepared to put some faith in the visitors at the prices. Mainly because Leeds have been far too inconsistent at home, losing 47% of their 15 home league games thus far. This includes four of the last five in South Yorkshire. Meanwhile, five of Southampton’s seven away losses this term were to top half sides. And finally, all but one of the eight previous Leeds Premier League home games saw three or more goals.
