English Premier League
Pick: Over 2.5 Goals
Odds: 4/6

Preview: Two teams approaching crisis points, if they aren’t already there, meet for only a second time at Elland Road since 2013. With a draw doing little to improve the prospects of either side, we could be set for a lively spectacle in West Yorkshire between Leeds United and Tottenham.

Leeds – Whites certainly not all right?

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been a welcome addition to the Premier League since returning for the 2020-21 campaign. However they are at serious risk of dropping back down a division unless both results and a defence which continues to leak goals at an alarming rate drastically improve. Wednesday’s crushing 6-0 loss to Liverpool marked a fourth defeat in five, conceding 16 across the last four fixtures alone.

Injuries clearly aren’t helping. Earlier in the season it was Raphinha who seemed as though he was the only Leeds player capable of pulling a rabbit of out the hat when needed. The Brazilian has looked disillusioned in recent weeks though. Meanwhile, at Elland Road, the Whites have lost three of the last four. These include 4-1 and 4-2 losses to Arsenal and Man Utd, both of whom are of a similar profile to Spurs.

Key Stat: Leeds are yet to record a Premier League win at home to a side currently in the top half of the table, with their three victories at Elland Road so far coming against teams in 11th (Crystal Palace), 18th (Burnley) and 19th (Watford).

Tottenham – Top four hopes fading fast?

Last week’s stunning upset at the Eithad was a revelation for neutrals seeking a genuine Premier League title race. From a Tottenham perspective though, it was a badly needed result in their faltering bid for a top four finish. Yet all hope appears lost once more following Wednesday’s damaging 1-0 loss in Burnley. It was the ultimate fall from grace for the side which went toe-to-toe with the leaders only four days prior.

Spurs have now lost four of their past five league games having previously been unbeaten in nine (W6 D3). And after scoring in eight successive fixtures, they have failed to find the net in three of their last five. Meanwhile, the 1-0 scoreline at Turf Moor represented the first time in six Premier League outings the Spurs backline hadn’t been breached on at least two occasions. The rot has well and truly seeped in.

Key Stat: All five Tottenham away victories in the Premier League this season saw them prevail by a solitary goal. There were 1-0 wins over Watford and Wolves while triumphs away at Leicester, Man City and Man City all came via 3-2 scorelines.

Leeds Vs Tottenham Betting Advice

The very fact Tottenham, with four losses from their last five Premier League games, begin as favourites to collect three points at Elland Road says as much about the current plight of Leeds than it does themselves. Saturday’s hosts are falling in the table like a stone, weighed down by a defence breached 16 times in the past four matches – shipping three to each of Aston Villa and Everton, four to Man Utd and six to Liverpool.

Leeds Vs Tottenham – Key Facts:

  • A 3-1 win in this same fixture last season brought Leeds their first win against Tottenham in their last eight Premier League meetings (D1 L6).
  • Leeds have conceded 16 times across their past four league fixtures (D1 L3), conceding at least twice in four of their last five Premier League home games.
  • Tottenham aren’t faring much better defensively. Antonio Conte’s men have allowed opposition teams to score 2+ in five of the past six Premier League games (W2 L4).

On this evidence, the likes of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane will be licking their lips at the prospects of going up against the division’s most porous backline (56 conceded in 26 games). Each of the last six competitive meetings have seen three or more goals, which includes a 3-1 scoreline in favour of Leeds in their only encounter at Elland Road in the last eight years. With neither presenting a convincing case, plump for goals.
