We’re down to the last eight in the inaugural running of the Europa Conference League and two of the favourites go head to head as Leicester host PSV in the first leg at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester City – Can Leicester get a positive result to take with them to Eindhoven next week?

It hasn’t been a vintage season for Leicester City but there are signs appearing that it could yet end with success. The Foxes registered another encouraging result and performance at the weekend with a 1-1 draw away to Manchester United which could easily have been a victory. It extends their run in the league to one loss in five which isn’t all that impressive on the face of it, but it is a distinct improvement on what went before.

Now attention turns to the Europa Conference League, a competition which Brendan Rodgers was infamously unaware of after their elimination from the Europa League at the end of last year.

That elimination came around following a third place finish in a group that contained Spartak Moscow, Napoli and Legia Warsaw. It was a group which Leicester should have had enough to qualify from but the fact they were unable to summed up their inconsistent and below-par performances that have blighted them throughout the season.
Their route to the quarter-final stage of this competition has seen them see of Randers of Denmark in comfortable fashion (7-2 on aggregate) before a sterner examination against Rennes of Ligue 1. They eventually prevailed 3-2 after a nervy second leg which kept their European dream alive.

PSV Preview – Will free-scoring PSV show their attacking threat to upset Premier League opponents?

Dropped points at the weekend mean PSV’s hopes of a title win are less likely now they trail leaders Ajax by four points. It could have been even worse considering they were 3-0 down and required an equaliser with virtually the last kick of the ball but any dropped points at this stage of a season when the margin for error is so small are so damaging.

Last week also brought news that the club’s head coach from next season on wards will be their former striker Ruud  van Nistlerooy. He will take over from Roger Schmidt who will hope to end his two years in charge with something to show for it and this may be the most likely prize.

PSV were also knocked out the Europa League and the Conference is actually the third European tournament they are competing in this season having been eliminated from Champions League qualification way back in August. The Dutch outfit squeaked past Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-1 on aggregate before an 8-4 success against Copenhagen last time out which included a thumping 4-0 win away from home in the second leg.

Cody Gakpo has been linked with a move to the Premier League next season and the Netherlands international has been in excellent form of late. He’s scored seven in his last nine including three in this competition.

Leicester City vs PSV Betting Advice

Whoever gets through this tie will feel they have an excellent chance of reaching the final, and that’s despite potentially facing Roma in the semi-final. The confidence either Leicester or PSV will get from a win could be significant approaching the last four match-up either with the Serie A giants or one of the surprise packages of European football this season, Bodo/Glimt.

Key Facts –  Leicester City vs PSV Betting Tip

  • Leicester have lost just one of their last 12 matches at home in all competitions
  • PSV have scored 20 goals in their last six matches, conceding eight
  • The winners of this game will pay the winners of Bodo/Glimt or Roma for the play in May’s final

What could be crucial in the outcome of this first leg is how strong Leicester have been at home in recent weeks. It’s four wins in a row at the King Power and just one loss in their last 12 home games across all competitions. I fully expect the tie to still be open ahead of the second leg but am backing Leicester to be taking a lead with them to Eindhoven next week.
