Preview: The Premier League is back following a two week hiatus and one team who should be chomping at the bit to get back underway is league leaders Liverpool, who have won all four of their matches to date and will be supremely confident about their prospects of making it five at home to Newcastle United. Anfield is the venue for the first top-flight encounter of the weekend.

Liverpool Preview – Klopp to celebrate 14th-straight PL victory as Reds boss?

Prior to the international break, Liverpool appeared to have rediscovered their groove. Which is a frightening prospect for everybody else, as even when not quite up to speed early on this team were still winning matches. If opponents Norwich (W4-1) and Southampton (W1-2) in the opening two outings weren’t dispatched with the air of authority we have come to expect, Arsenal (W3-1) and Burnley (W0-3) certainly were.

That is four successive wins – which becomes a club-record thirteen in a row when including results from last season – as The Reds return to domestic action protecting the only perfect record in the Premier League. However, for a team boasting the strongest defence last season, one which kept 21 clean sheets, to have kept only one so far has to be of some concern as Alisson nears his return to action.

This will also be the first game since that infamous fallout at Turf Moor whereby Sadio Mane was visibly upset with the perceived selfishness of Mohamad Salah. Back at Anfield, it is the Egyptian King who would appear the more likely to help himself to further spoils – all three of Salah’s goals this season were scored at home, where has has found himself on the scoresheet in four of his last five league appearances at the home of The Reds.

A bet on Salah/Liverpool on the Score/Win market would have returned a winner in both of Liverpool’s home league games so far this season then, and is 4/6 with Boylesports. Interestingly, though, one of their centre-backs has popped up with a goal in those same encounters, with Virgil van Dijk adding a third against Norwich and Joel Matip nodding in an opener versus Arsenal. The pair are 5/1 and 8/1, respectively, to score anytime with WilliamHill.

Newcastle United Preview – Toon Army to celebrate more away day success?

Hapless and seemingly destined for a rocky campaign when losing their first two matches to Arsenal (L0-1) and Norwich City (L3-1), The Magpies deserve credit for not caving in thereafter as gritty displays at Tottenham (W0-1) and at home to Watford (1-1) helped them not only ease some pressure on under-fire manager Steve Bruce but also climb up the league table. Victory here and their turnaround would well and truly feel complete.

Unfortunately, the prospects of three points are slim at best. Not since 1994 have they managed to record a league win at Anfield, losing on 19 of their 23 subsequent visits. The heaviest of those occurred only last season, when a team who were then under the guidance of Rafael Benitez were comprehensively beaten 4-0 – though that wasn’t a regular occurrence, with Newcastle falling to fewer defeats in 2018-19 on the road (W4 D8 L7) than all bar the top two teams.

In fact, The Toon Army have enjoyed themselves on their recent skirmishes with the team. That 3-1 loss at Norwich in their first away outing of this campaign being the only pointless venture in the last five such matches (W3 D1 L1), a decent little run that included three victories without conceding at Leicester (0-1), Fulham (0-4) and, of course, Tottenham (0-1). Another Newcastle Win To Nil is 45/1 with BetVictor!

One goal could well be the limit of Newcastle’s ambitions here as well, with the team still to notch more than once in a league outing this season having netted exactly one goal in each of their previous three fixtures – and all came via different scorers. Brazilian forward Joelinton opened the scoring away to Tottenham last away day and is 20/1 with Boylesports for a repeat.

Liverpool V Newcastle Key Facts:

  • Liverpool are currently enjoying a thirteen game winning streak in the Premier League.
  • Newcastle have lost only one of their previous five away Premier League games (W3 D1 L1).
  • The last two league meetings at Anfield were both won by Liverpool, who were last beaten at home by Newcastle in the league back in 1994.

Betting Summary

Plenty on the line for Liverpool, who are looking to remain top of the league and seeking a club-record-extending 14th consecutive Premier League win. They were beginning to look imperious before the international break, while they completely swatted the same opposition in last season’s corresponding fixture, so anything other than another victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men would be a huge shock.

Speaking of shocks, though; Newcastle were the last team to produce one when taking all three points from their trip to Tottenham. That display was a significant improvement on the one that seen them comfortably beaten 3-1 at newly-promoted Norwich earlier, while it was also their third away win in their last five such matches (W3 D1 L1) stretching back into last season.

As spirited as Newcastle were at Tottenham, this Liverpool team are a step up again and are unlikely to be anywhere near as lacklustre or below par. The Magpies failed to score on their most recent two visits to Anfield and although The Reds’ backline hasn’t been as watertight this season, I do expect them to control proceedings here and another Liverpool win without conceding is achievable.
