Preview: The pick of Sunday’s games from the Premier League comes from Merseyside, as quadruple-chasing Liverpool target maximum points from a fixture they ended up on the losing side of a 2-0 scoreline last season. Everton, understandably, are a huge price to produce a second successive league win at Anfield.

Liverpool – Reds back to playing catch up on Man City?

The big games keep coming thick and fast. Sunday’s Merseyside derby falls in between a league game against Manchester United and the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Villarreal. It’s exciting for everyone involved, with fans daring to dream of a clean sweep of major honours. For that to materialise, though, the Reds must realistically win all of their remaining league games.

Liverpool were sensational here at Anfield in midweek, vanquishing an old nemesis with a 4-0 whitewash. A result which briefly sent them top. However, Klopp’s men could find they are as much as four points adrift of Man City, who play on Saturday, come kick-off, which is a different pressure again. But having won 11 of the past 12 in the league, including 11 in a row at Anfield, the Reds will be expected to respond in kind.

Key Stat: Liverpool didn’t concede a goal in 10 of their 13 home wins in the Premier League this season. Their recent 4-0 win here against Manchester United was their 11th consecutive at Anfield in the league, the last four all being to nil.

Everton – Can Toffees repeat last season’s Anfield antics?

In one of their worst seasons in recent memory, these Everton players have an opportunity to redeem themselves amongst an agitated and disgruntled fan base should they take points off their Merseyside rivals this weekend. If they were to prove successful, not only could it turn out to be decisive in the Premier League title race but, more importantly, may prove pivotal in their own bid to avoid relegation.

A 2-0 win in this fixture last season saw Everton end their 20-game winless run away to the Reds, last managing successive away Merseyside derby victories in 1986. That seems like wishful thinking though. Sunday’s match-up pits the team with the best home record in England’s top-flight against the division’s worst travellers (W1 D3 L11), that being an Everton side which has lost the last six said fixtures in a row.

Key Stat: The Toffees are enduring a miserable run of away form, losing 10 of their 11 previous away matches in the Premier League. This includes losing the last six away games in a row, which is their worst run of consecutive away defeats for 28 years.

Liverpool Vs Everton Betting Advice

Many expect the chasm between the sides to be reflected in the score on Sunday, but this has rarely been the case. Across the previous eleven Merseyside derbies, in league and cups, only three ended with the teams separated by a margin of two goals or more – and one of those was Everton’s 2-0 victory last season at Anfield. Nevertheless, on current form, it would be a shock if the visitors could keep the scores close.

Liverpool Vs Everton – Key Facts:

  • Having won 4-1 at Goodison Park in December, Liverpool can complete only their second Premier League double over Everton in ten seasons.
  • Everton did win last season’s corresponding fixture 2-0. However the Toffees are unlikely to repeat the feat, at least not on current form, after losing 10 of their last 11 Premier League away matches (D1).
  • Mohamed Salah scored twice in Liverpool’s 4-1 win at Everton earlier in the season. No Reds player has scored two or more goals home and away in the league against the Toffees in the same season for nearly a century.

Everton have lost 10 of the last 11 away Premier League games, losing to nil away to Man City and Tottenham. Here, Frank Lampard’s side are bidding to become only the third visiting team to breach a Liverpool backline boasting nine clean sheets in its last 11 home league games. Liverpool winning to nil is short enough, however, so throw in Mo Salah scoring. The Egyptian leads the way in the Premier League Golden Boot race with 22, and managed two in the reverse fixture.
