Preview: There could be as many as 12 points separating Liverpool from the Premier League summit by the time their fixture with a crestfallen Leicester City kick-offs at Anfield on Thursday. The onus, therefore, falls on the hosts to secure the win that keeps faint hopes of reeling in league leaders Man City alive.

Liverpool – Every league game now a must-win?

Sunday’s 3-1 victory against Cardiff City saw Liverpool progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup for only the second time under Jurgen Klopp, and ensured all four routes to major trophies this season remained open. They are the only English side still in contention for every competition. Arguably the most challenging will be overhauling league leaders Man City, the Reds nine points from the summit with a game in hand.

Liverpool are now enjoying a run of four straight victories in all competitions, but have won only two of the past five in the Premier League. All but one was away from home, however, winning five on the spin at Anfield where they are unbeaten in 14 (W10 D4) stretching back into last season. Meanwhile, of those to have visited in 2021-22 so far, only Aston Villa and Chelsea prevented the hosts from scoring twice or more.

Key Stat: Liverpool have won seven of ten Premier League home games this season, with only Man City boasting a better points-per-game return at home. Six of the Reds’ victories on Merseyside were to nil, failing to win three of the four home games in which their defence was breached.

Leicester – Can Foxes respond to ’embarrassing’ cup surrender?

Brendan Rodgers labelled his team’s shock 4-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest in Sunday’s FA Cup tie as ’embarrassing’, as the defending champions were eliminated in emphatic fashion by the Championship side. The Northern Irishman will demand a response from his charges, of that there is no doubt, but a visit to former stomping ground Anfield is hardly conducive for a swift return to more prosperous ways.

Leicester haven’t won away at Liverpool since the 1998-99 season, when Martin O’Neill’s Foxes did the double over the Reds. But a 1-0 victory at King Power Stadium in late December, coupled with a strong display in the 3-3 draw on Merseyside in the League Cup days earlier, will give them belief. However, this is a team whose only away league wins all season have come against Brentford and Norwich City.

Key Stat: Leicester have scored the first goal of the game without winning in each of their previous two Premier League contests (lost 2-3 to Tottenham, drew 1-1 with Brighton). Last doing so in three consecutive top-flight matches in December 2017, when the third was in a 2-1 defeat at Anfield to Liverpool.

Liverpool Vs Leicester Betting Advice

Since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp to Liverpool in 2015, only Man City have won as many league games as Leicester (4) has against the Reds. The Foxes somehow winning 1-0 at the King Power in December despite being light on first team numbers. Nevertheless, it will have to go down as a huge disappointment were Liverpool not to overcome opponents currently at a low ebb and without top scorer Jamie Vardy.

Liverpool Vs Leicester City – Key Facts:

  • Leicester have won the last two Premier League meetings with Liverpool. Both, however, were at home, last beating the Reds away from home 2-0 in April 1999.
  • Since then the Foxes have failed to win in ten visits (W8 D2). Moreover, Liverpool are enjoying a 14-game unbeaten run in home league games (W10 D4), winning each of the last five.
  • Liverpool have led at half-time in all but one of their seven Premier League victories at Anfield this season. Meanwhile, Fabinho, who is on penalties in the absence of top scorer Salah, is looking to score for the third successive league game.

We are unlikely to see Mane and Salah on Thursday due to their AFCON exertions on Sunday, but this shouldn’t really matter. Liverpool are on a four-game winning streak, winning the last five at Anfield in the league. The Reds average 2.5 goals per-game at home, so should appreciate the visit from a Leicester side which has leaked 18 goals across their last five away matches in all competitions – including three to a depleted Liverpool in the EFL Cup quarter-finals in December.
