Liverpool -A determined Salah could wreak havoc?

Not all victories can be achieved while scoring multiple times. Liverpool certainly seemed to set out with the intention of doing so this season. However, after netting at least twice in 13 of their opening 14 Premier League games, Jurgen Klopp’s side produced only one strike in each of the last two, following up their last-gasp 1-0 win at Wolves by beating Aston Villa via the same scoreline at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool really ought to have won both encounters by a more comfortable margin, though. The Reds put up xGF in excess of 2.5 in each victory. They lead the way on that metric thus far and so should return to their prolific best soon, with the visit of the league’s most porous backline likely to see Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and possibly Roberto Firmino, now the Brazilian is fit, run riot on Merseyside.

Another record potentially awaits for Mo Salah meanwhile. The Egyptian remains the outright leading goalscorer in the Premier League with 14, five clear of his closest challenger. He coolly converted the winning penalty against Villa to mark his 14th consecutive league game scoring or assisting, one shy of Jamie Vardy’s all-time record. Moreover, he has scored in all four previous home games against Newcastle.

Newcastle – First away win of season highly improbable?

The size of the task in front of Eddie Howe, as he strives to keep the club in the Premier League, was laid bare at the King Power Stadium on Sunday. The Newcastle boss was overseeing his fifth game (W1 D2 L2) since replacing Steve Bruce. However he had little to cheer as his players were given the run around by Leicester City, who put their midweek disappointment in Europe behind them with an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Howe could point to a contentious penalty decision that went against his team when the scoreline was still goalless as a mitigating factor for the loss. The manner in which his team folded in that second-half, though, was galling. Particularly as they will need plenty of fight and resilience ahead of a brutal stretch of matches, beginning with a trip to Anfield before hosting both Manchester clubs.

Newcastle last won away to Liverpool in the league way back in April 1994. Since then, they have lost 20 of 25 visits to Anfield – though did avoid a fourth successive defeat in this fixture last season when scoring late on to earn a 1-1 draw. A repeat seems unthinkable. No team has earned fewer points (3 – D3 L5) away from home in the Premier League this season than the Magpies, who are yet to win on their travels.

Liverpool Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

The likelihood of a Liverpool victory is made all the more apparent by the fact no team can be backed at shorter odds to collect three points in midweek. The home side are on a five game winning streak in the league (four of those being to nil), not lost a competitive fixture at home all season, winning eight of eleven, and have won all of the last five competitive matches at Anfield without so much as conceding a goal.

Liverpool Vs Newcastle – Key Facts:

  • Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are targetting a sixth successive Premier League victory, with four of their previous five seeing them pick up maximum points and a clean sheet.
  • Newcastle are one of two top-flight sides without an away win this season (D3 L5). Meanwhile their tally of 34 conceded after 16 games is their highest at this stage since 1977-78.
  • Eddie Howe has accrued five points out of fifteen as Newcastle manager (W1 D2 L2). However, he is looking to avoid losing a seventh successive league game against Liverpool (19-1 agg).

In recent outings versus Burnley (1-0 win) and Norwich (1-1), Newcastle had displayed some signs of improvement from a defensive perspective. However, Saturday’s comprehensive 4-0 defeat to Leicester showed there is still much to be done before this team can be considered remotely reliable at the back. Mohamed Salah, driven on by his pursuit of another ridiculous record, will be licking his lips in particular.
