Preview: Despite registering 15 wins in their past 17 games in the competition, Liverpool look as though they will finish a point shy of becoming Premier League champions for a second time in three seasons. Their final day opponents are Wolves, a side without a win in six league games ahead of Sunday’s visit to Anfield.

Liverpool – Reds will fall agonisingly short of title?

A second-string side ensured this season’s title race has gone down to the final day, after a 2-1 win away at Southampton on Tuesday saw the Reds move back within a single point of leaders Man City. The equation is therefore simple. Liverpool will be crowned Premier League champions if they beat Wolves at Anfield and Aston Villa prevent Pep Guardiola’s side from picking up three points in Manchester.

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes in midweek from the side that defeated Chelsea on penalties in last Saturday’s FA Cup final. However the German is expected to recall most, if not all, of his big hitters. Liverpool have already completed a domestic cup double and this is an opportunity for the players to take in the adulation of the Anfield crowd, who have seen their team go unbeaten at home all season (W14 D4).

Key Stat: The Reds had won 12 consecutive Premier League home games – 10 without conceding – prior to a 1-1 draw against Tottenham in their most recent outing at Anfield.

Wolves – Season effectively over before Sunday?

It is rarely encouraging when a team knows they cannot finish any higher on the final day of the season than the position in which they started it. Wolves will finish no better than eighth, outside the European places for a second season running, after a run of one point in six games, culminating in last week’s 1-1 draw at home to already-relegated Norwich, put an end to any hopes of catching West Ham in seventh.

It has truly been a dismal final few weeks for Bruno Lage and his team, who for large parts of the season shaped as though they could challenge for a top-seven finish that would see them return to UEFA club competition in 2022/23. Instead they head into matchday 38 on the back of four away defeats in six (W1 D1), aware that a positive result on Merseyside would only be to the benefit of others – chiefly Man City.

Key Stat: Just 35% of Wolves’ Premier League matches this season featured both teams scoring, with this figure dropping to 28% when the team play away from home. Both figures are the lowest in England’s top tier.

Liverpool Vs Wolves Betting Advice

Watford, who could yet finish bottom, are the only team enduring a longer wait for a win than Wolves, whose drought stretched into a sixth game last time out with a 1-1 draw at home to bottom-of-the-table Norwich. Now, a team which has earned two points from the last 18 available, goes to Anfield to take on a Liverpool with 15 wins from their last 17 league games, needing another to keep slim title hopes alive.

Liverpool Vs Wolves – Key Facts:

  • Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool remain imperious in front of their own fans. The Reds have the best home record in the Premier League this season, winning 14 and losing none of 18 said fixtures.
  • Conversely, only already-relegated Watford are on a longer run in the English top-flight without a league win than Wolves, who have taken two of the last 18 points (D2 L4).
  • As if the omens weren’t already stacked against them. Wolves head to a ground they’ve lost at on all four previous visits, the last three of which all ‘to nil’.

The home side are short odds to secure the result they need. Their recent schedule has been brutal though. As if energy levels weren’t already sapped, they will want to conserve some for next week’s Champions League final. A potentially modest victory awaits then. Under 2.5 Goals landed in all but one of the Reds’ five previous home league games. Moreover, Wolves are without a goal in four of six prior away outings.
