Lyon secured what could be a vital 1-0 win away at Russian giants, CSKA Moscow, in last week’s first leg of this round of 16 in the Europa League, but they’ll now need another similar performance at their Groupama Stadium on Thursday night in order to be in the hat for the quarter-finals.
Lyon had finished a comfortable second place in Group E in the group stages of the competition, seven points ahead of third placed Everton, and in the previous round, the French club saw off Spanish side, Villarreal, 4-1 on aggregate to seal their place in this round of 16.
It’s very unlikely we’ll see as many goals in this tie, with Lyon expected to keep things tight with a view to hitting CSKA on the break, and this may well suit Lyon who have lost just once in their last seven matches at home in all competitions that also includes a 2-1 win over runaway Ligue 1 leaders, PSG.
CSKA Moscow will bring a fair amount of confidence into this second leg in France on Thursday night following a resounding 3-0 win away at Akhmat Grozny in the Russian Premier League on the weekend, despite going down 1-0 at home to Lyon in the first leg.
CSKA are unbeaten in their last five away matches in all competitions although three of these were mid-season friendlies, and they’ll be playing just their second away match in the Europa League on Thursday night after a six-year absence (due to qualifying for the Champions League).
CSKA have performed quite well on their travels in Europe, but I fancy they’ll just come up short against an equally solid performing Lyon on home turf on Thursday night.
