Preview: The eyes of the footballing world fall on Etihad Stadium for what promises to be another exhilarating, and likely goal-laden, renewal of a rivalry which has rose to prominence on the back of their recent dominance of the English Premier League. With Liverpool already five points better off, though, it is a fixture Man City cannot afford to lose.

Man City Preview – Citizens boasting upper hand in Manchester?

It was around this stage last season that Man City’s grip on the Premier League title visibly loosened, following up a disappointing midweek draw in the Champions League by then losing 3-1 at Anfield to Liverpool last November. They fell nine points behind the Reds on that occasion, a deficit they never recovered from. So they will understand the potential ramifications that comes with defeat on Sunday.

Twelve months on and City aren’t exactly presenting a strong case ahead of the first pivotal meeting of the season between the main title protagonists. Six games in and Pep Guardiola’s side have won only half their fixtures (W3 D2 L1), endured a chastening afternoon here with Leicester City when losing 5-2, and scored a modest 9 goals in 6 games. The latter their lowest goal return in the top-flight since 2007-08.

There are positives to be had, though. None more so than their recent record in this fixture: The Citizens winning the past three league meetings at Etihad Stadium by an aggregate score of 11-1, which includes last season’s 4-0 trouncing in July. Just as heartening, however, will have been the sight of key men starring on their return to first-team action in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory here over Olympiacos.

Liverpool Preview – Jota arrival has revitalised Reds offensive?

During a turbulent start to the campaign which has seen them suffer a monumental blow with news of Virgil van Dijk’s long-term absence through injury, slump to their heaviest defeat in more than half-a-century, and lose a centre-halve to injury on a seemingly week-by-week basis, it must be wholly disheartening for their rivals bearing witness to Jurgen Klopp’s men reassuming top spot in the Premier League.

Sitting a point clear at the top, Liverpool come into Sunday knowing a fourth successive league defeat at the Eithad would not be disastrous – particularly for a side which has exhibited an ability this season to respond well in adversity. The rewards for victory, meanwhile, are great as it would open up an eight-point gap on their closest rivals for the title. Although Man City would still have that game in hand.

It is therefore arguable that the Reds, who have won five of seven (W5 D1 L1) league games so far, come into this under less pressure. They certainly won’t be short on confidence after Tuesday’s scintillating performance in Italy, making it three wins out of three in the Champions League with a 5-0 win over Atalanta. A hat-trick for Diogo Jota taking his tally since arriving in the summer to seven in ten games.

Man City Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

Predicting the outcome on Sunday is complicated by the erratic nature of some of their respective results already this season, with Man City’s 5-2 home loss to Leicester City and Liverpool conceding seven in a 7-2 defeat away to Aston Villa serving as a reminder that either side are prone to capitulating. That was essentially what happened here in July, too, when Liverpool, with the title assured, were comprehensively beaten 4-0.

Man City Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Pep Guardiola’s men are bidding to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time this season. Man City beat Sheffield United 1-0 away last time out.
  • Falling behind is unlikely to unduly trouble a Liverpool side that has recovered more points (28) from losing positions than any other team since the start of last season.
  • Each of the past three Premier League meetings in Manchester have gone the way of the home side, whose 4-0 victory here in July extended the aggregate score to 11-1.

Over the course of this season, though, there is no doubt which side has exhibited more consistency: Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s side winning five of seven in the league compared with Man City‘s three in six. Moreover, the Reds boast a superior goals-per-game ratio away (2.00) than City in general (1.50). So while the home side are boosted by several key players returning, namely Gabriel Jesus, they are still neither settled nor in peak form and could come unstuck.
