Preview: Eithad Stadium is the equivalent of a fortress as far as Southampton are concerned. Saturday’s visitors are without a win here since April 2004 and, with Man City in such sparkling form, seem highly unlikely to end that run anytime soon.

Manchester City – Another five-star City performance?

Defending Premier League champions Man City continue to stalk the early leaders. Pep Guardiola’s side made the worst possible start when falling to a 1-0 loss away at Tottenham Hotspur on the opening weekend but have come out firing thereafter, winning their next three league fixtures without conceding to close to within a point of leading trio Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

The last two to have taken place here, at the Etihad, were entirely one sided affairs as City chalked up successive 5-0 scorelines against Arsenal and Norwich City. Having also won their final home league game of last season 5-0 against Everton, Man City can become only the third team in English top-flight history to win four home league games by a margin of five goals or more in consecutive fashion.

Seeing as how they went one better here in midweek, scoring six past last season’s Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig, all signs point towards a fifth straight win in all competitions for Pep and his rampant team. Even more so bearing in mind their imperious record against Saints. City have won eight of their past nine league meetings and are unbeaten in ten as hosts (W9), winning each of the last four.

Southampton – Saints can spoil Cityzens clean sheet?

Among five teams yet to register their first league win of the season, patience may well be needed from Southampton supporters. Last week’s 0-0 scoreline at St Mary’s with a still unbeaten West Ham wasn’t a bad result on the face of it, but does leave them on three points after four games and in the bottom half of the table. Moreover, they remain without a win in the league since beating relegated Fulham in May.

That is now six Premier League games without a win (D3 L3). A run which has seen them net just four times. Yet the blank against the Hammers was only their first of 2021-22, with their 8-0 demolition of League Two’s Newport Country in the second round of the EFL Cup boosting their tally to 12. Encouragingly, though, they do boast a useful knack for finding the back of the net at Saturday’s venue.

Saints possess a truly rotten record at the Eithad, losing 11 of 12 in all competitions since a 3-1 league win in April 2004. However they did score in all but one of the past sixteen there, breaching the Man City defence at least once on each of their last seven visits. Set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse has netted on his last two trips to Manchester for this fixture and could be a spot of value in the scorer markets.

Manchester City Vs Southampton Betting Advice

Anything less than a win for the home side would go down as a big surprise. Fresh from scoring six against RB Leipzig at the Etihad, where they have scored five or more in each of their last four competitive home matches going back to last season. Man City are targeting a fifth straight Premier League home win against Southampton, who they have beaten eight of the last nine times they have met each other in the league.

Manchester City vs Southampton – Key Facts:

  • The task in front of Southampton is laid bare by the fact they last won away to Man City, in any competition, in April 2004, losing 11 of 12 subsequent visits.
  • However, the Saints should go close to becoming the first visiting team this season to score past Ederson. Southampton have scored on each of their last six league visits to Man City.
  • Avoiding a big defeat is another matter, though. For Man City have scored five or more in all of their previous four competitive home matches.

The obvious bet, however, is Man City prevailing without keeping their clean sheet in tact. This bet hasn’t landed in any of their four league games so far this term but in Southampton they face an opponent with a proven track record for scoring against them. Particularly here. The Saints have found the back of the net on each of their last seven visits to Man City in league and cup, six of those in losing efforts.
