Preview: Having already claimed the scalp of 2019/20 Premier League winners Liverpool, can West Ham repeat the trick away at reigning champions Man City? Their record in recent head-to-head encounters suggests otherwise although David Moyes’ men do sit fourth in the standings for good reason.

Manchester City – Peps enjoys his duels with Hammers?

Last season’s English champions made extremely light work of Rafael Benitez’s Everton in their latest league fixture, registering a 3-0 win at Etihad Stadium that could have been by a much wider margin. It was their second successive victory in the Premier League, after their 2-0 triumph at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby, and eighth for the season (D2 L2) as they continue to stalk leaders Chelsea.

The Citizens didn’t fare so well in their most recent home match-up with a side from London, though, falling to a shock 2-0 scoreline at the hands of Crystal Palace. In theory, Sunday’s opponents, who are riding high in fourth, are a much tougher proposition. Although nine wins from their past ten top-flight meetings, scoring 28 and conceding only five, suggests City well and truly have the beating of West Ham.

That Palace game remains their only blip at home this season (W4 D1 L1). In fact, it was the only one of seven prior Premier League home games not to feature a clean sheet for Pep Guardiola’s side, whose four victories at the Etihad this term (vs Arsenal, Burnley, Everton and Norwich) were all to nil. Though the Spaniard was missing several key players for Wednesday’s 2-1 victory here over Paris Saint-Germain.

West Ham – Moyes out to better dismal H2H record?

The Hammers spurned an opportunity to equal a club-record five consecutive Premier League wins in their latest league outing, going down 1-0 to Wolves at Molineux to Raul Jimenez’s long-range strike. After the highs of beating Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham and, in particular, Liverpool came arguably the team’s flattest performance of the season, something David Moyes will be keen to rectify in Manchester.

That will be a lot easier said than done, of course, with West Ham possessing a rotten record in this fixture. They have won only one of the past ten league meetings and lost each of the last five here in Manchester, since a 2-1 victory in September 2015. Although they would provide a decent account of themselves in last season’s corresponding outing, losing 2-1 despite being the better team on the day.

That Wolves match would also bring up a first away loss of the 2021-22 league campaign for David Moyes and his team (W4 D1), while also halting their three-game winning streak on their travels. Moreover, it was only the second occasion this season in which they didn’t manage to find the back of the opposing net at least once – the other being their goalless draw at Southampton in September.

Manchester City Vs West Ham Betting Advice

Can West Ham replicate what their London rivals, Crystal Palace, managed to do here at the end of last month? The league table certainly suggests so, with the Hammers’ total of 23 points through 12 fixtures only three fewer than Sunday’s hosts. That would imply a competitive contest in the offing, and while this may turn out to be the case, recent meetings between the teams point towards an all too familiar outcome.

Manchester City Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • Three points are all that separate the teams ahead of Sunday’s kick-off, with a first win at the Etihad since 2015 enough for West Ham to move level on points with second place Man City.
  • Man City have won all five subsequent Premier League home games versus West Ham since that aforementioned loss, scoring 10 and conceding four thereafter.
  • West Ham arrive in solid form, though, last week’s loss at Wolves ending their four-game winning streak. David Moyes’ men average 1.92 goals on the road, scoring in five of six away fixtures thus far.

Man City were always going to be big favourites and their record of nine wins from the last ten league meetings is formidable. Pep Guardiola’s men don’t give an awful lot away at home either, keeping a clean sheet in six their last seven home league games. However, West Ham have only failed to score twice this season, and did bag a goal in four of their previous six Premier League visits to Man City.
