Manchester United – Top four hopes hand in the balance?

A run of one win in five Premier League games (D2 L2) has done serious damage to the club’s ambitions of playing in next season’s Champions League. Last Saturday’s abject performance in the 1-0 loss away to Everton seeing the gap to in-form Tottenham in fourth grow to six points. Quite simply there is no further room for error, and renders the visit from bottom side Norwich this weekend a must-win.

Not that this is the type of fixture they revel in. United have lost two of the last four Premier League fixtures when hosting the team starting the day bottom. They would also fail to beat the teams currently 19th (Watford) and 17th (Everton) at Old Trafford this season, while four of their last seven home league games concluded with them dropping points. It seems there is nowhere for this beleaguered side to hide.

Key Stat: After last week’s loss to Everton, Ralf Rangnick has a win percentage of just 47% from his 17 Premier League games (W7 D6 L3) as Manchester United interim manager.

Norwich – Smith targeting history at Old Trafford?

Dean Smith knows what is required at Old Trafford, having led Aston Villa to a 1-0 victory in September. Should he mastermind another on Saturday, he will become the first manager in Premier League history to win twice at this ground with two different teams. The Canaries travel to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ still seven points from safety but on the back of a morale-boosting 2-0 home win over fellow strugglers Burnley.

Norwich were good value for last week’s three points, even if they did ride their luck on occasion. Teemu Pukki wrapped up the victory with a ninth league goal of 2021-22, seven more than any team-mate and 45% of the Canaries overall total. The Finn, who hasn’t scored an away goal since November, is 7/2 to score in Manchester as he looks to fire his team to only a third away league win of the campaign (W2 D3 L10).

Key Stat: Prior to their recent win over Burnley, Norwich hadn’t won in eight consecutive Premier League games (D2 L6). Interestingly, the Canaries’ two previous victories at Carrow Road this season saw them win the very next fixture, which also happened to be away from home.

Manchester United Vs Norwich Betting Advice

Needing to bridge a six point gap to the Champions League, and with difficult games away to Liverpool and Arsenal on the horizon, this is absolutely a must-win fixture for Manchester United. Their reputation clearly precedes them, though, as despite a run of one win in five – and only two in their last five here at Old Trafford – they are incredibly short odds, prohibitively so, to defeat the Premier League’s bottom side.

Manchester United Vs Norwich City – Key Facts:

  • Although recent form hasn’t been good enough, Man Utd can take confidence from their record of 12 wins from their past 15 Premier League meetings (L3) against Norwich.
  • On current form though, the hosts do look vulnerable. It is one win in five in the league (D2 L2) having won only two of the last five at Old Trafford (D3).
  • Nevertheless, Saturday’s opponents Norwich are still favourable opponents. The Canaries were winless in eight, losing six, before winning at home to Burnley last time.

Across their last 14 home league games, Man Utd have won only six times (D6 L3). Of these, four were by a solitary goal while the others were both by a margin of two. It is also worth remembering how laboured the Red Devils were in winning the reverse fixture, 1-0 at Carrow Road courtesy of a Ronaldo penalty. So as poor as Norwich are, this is unlikely to be a convincing scoreline for the home side.
