Manchester United Preview – Will United end their great rivals’ hopes of Champions League football?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not hid his disgust at the demands placed on his team and squad as United prepare for a fourth game in the space of seven days. There’s no doubt it’s not an ideal situation but with the FA Cup final taking centre stage this weekend, and the need for this match (rearranged following the club’s supporters’ protest two weeks ago) to be played prior to the final week of matches.

The Norwegian elected to field a much weakened side against Leicester on Tuesday with 10 changes to the team who beat Aston Villa on Sunday. Despite drawing level in the first half, United came up short against Brendan Rodgers’ team – losing 2-1 and that means their rivals Manchester City are crowned champions.

Defeat to Leicester is just the second time United have lost since the beginning of November – they’ve won 18 and drawn nine during the same period. It’s likely that Solskjaer will recall the majority if not all the rested players for this game as they look to prevent the visitors from finishing in the top four.

United will then finish their domestic season against Fulham and Wolves before attempting to win the first silverware under OGS when taking on Villareal in the final of the Europa League final which takes place at the end of the month.

Liverpool Preview – Are Liverpool able to find some of their best form as they bid to reach next year’s Champions League?

Jurgen Klopp would have been watching on with deep regret as Leicester took all three points at Old Trafford earlier this week. It means the Foxes are now nine points clear of them in the race for top four, albeit having played two games more. Chelsea sit fourth and seven clear of Liverpool whilst West Ham are one point ahead of the Reds in fifth – both teams having played a game more.

A lot has to happen for Liverpool to finish in the top four but they simply have to win their remaining four games and hope that other teams do them a favour against the teams currently above them.

If Klopp’s men can get a vital win here then their fixtures between now and the end of the campaign do look somewhat favourable as they face West Brom, Burnley and Crystal Palace.

Should Liverpool win their last four games then it will be the first time they have reeled five straight wins (including the weekend success over Southampton) since September, and that was combining the last weeks of the previous season and the beginning of this campaign. It highlights just how much of a challenge their title defence has been this term.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Betting Advice

It’s the biggest game in English football as the two most successful clubs go head to head. United probably need one more win to be absolutely certain of second place but their motivation is surely to end Liverpool’s hopes of Champion League football. The visitors just simply have to win and take care of their own business.

It was a dour goalless draw at Anfield when the sides met earlier in the season – making it three draws in the last four league meetings.

Key Facts – Manchester United vs Liverpool Betting Tip

  • Manchester United lost their first in 15 league games when going down 2-1 to Leicester on Tuesday
  • Liverpool have to win their remaining four games to have any chance of a top four finish
  • Three of the last four meetings between the teams have ended in draws

Whilst there has been limited goals in this fixture of late this could be the exception. Liverpool just have to go for the win and United will love that as they look to counter. The teams played out a 3-2 cracker in the FA Cup here earlier this year and I’m taking both teams to find the net again.
