One of the French Open tournament front runners Dominic Thiem will be taking his first steps onto the courts at Roland Garros this season.

The newly crowned US Open winner is the red hot favourite to win this opening match of the campaign.

But there were easier ones that he could have opened with as he will face former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic in the first round.

Marin Cilic Preview – Can Cilic dump Thiem out of the French Open?

There could be a potential banana skin for Dominic Thiem in the strange, cold and damp conditions at Roland Garros.

This tournament is being played in conditions far away from the height of the usual French summer.

Marin Cilic took part at the recent Italian Open on clay and won a couple of matches there before being eliminated in the third round by Casper Ruud.

Interestingly in the second round at the ATP Masters 1000 event, Cilic knocked out sixth seed David Goffin.

Prior to that Cilic faced Dominic Thiem in the third round of the US Open and went down in four sets there against the second-seed.

Cilic is running as the 5/1 big underdog for this first round match* (odds taken 00:12 GMT Monday, 28th September).

Cilic has never been the biggest of threats on clay, but he has reached the quarter-finals in two of the last three French Open campaigns.

So it’s not a bad track record from him there in recent times and he was a fourth round finisher at the Australian Open earlier this year.

He is competitive on his day and will be searching for his first ever win over Thiem, having failed in the three previous efforts.

Dominic Thiem Preview – Thiem to continue unbeaten against Cilic?

Dominic Thiem made his big Grand Slam title breakthrough at the recent US Open.

After having been the losing finalist in the last two editions of the French Open the Austrian will be looking to go one better at the end of this campaign.

This opener against Cilic is part of a potentially tough draw that he faces throughout the tournament, however, to get there.

The most recent meeting between Cilic and Thiem, was at the US Open this year as mentioned.

All three of the previous ones have been on hard courts, so this is new territory for them, but Thiem is such an accomplished player on the clay.

With Thiem being a long odds-on favourite at 1/8 then there is little value there in the match outright* (odds taken 00:12 GMT Monday, 28th September).

Dominic Thiem is dominating things in the tennis betting market and a 3-0 option on set betting for him is at 8/11.

While seeing him drop a set against the Croatian, as he did at the Australian Open returns an 11/4 quote for that 3-1 success* (odds taken 00:12 GMT Monday, 28th September).

The positive for Thiem, of course, is that he has the current form behind him from what he did at Flushing Meadows.

He will be expected to march on through to the second round.

Marin Cilic vs Dominic Thiem Betting Advice

This is one of the more interesting first round matches from the men’s draw at the French Open 2020.

Cilic is a former US Open champion and has done pretty well with a couple of quarter final appearances in the last three efforts at the French Open.

But he is nowhere near as strong on the dirt as Dominic Thiem is and we expect the Croatian to fall.

Key Facts – Marin Cilic vs Dominic Thiem Betting Tip

  • Marin Cilic has failed to beat Thiem in 3 previous attempts
  • Marin Cilic has been a losing quarter finalist in two of the last three French Open events
  • Dominic Thiem recently won the US Open

The conditions in France are not ideal for the clay court specialists because of the weather and therefore, we expect Cilic to come in and take a set at least.

He’s gritty enough to get that on the board, yet we don’t see him taking out the Austrian.

Interestingly Thiem passed on the clay event at the Italian Open so this will be his first match this season on the dirt.

So the Thiem 3-1 option in set betting is right for our tennis betting pick at 11/4* (odds taken 00:12 GMT Monday, 28th September).
