Monaco and Lille are both enduring disappointing seasons so far so Friday night’s game between the two provides a chance for one of them to begin climbing the table.

Monaco Preview – Will it be a fourth straight home win in the league for Monaco?

Niko Kovac is coming under pressure as his Monaco team sit in the bottom half of Ligue 1. Kovac – who took over in the summer of 2020, led the club from the principality to third place and a chance to qualify for the Champions League. Despite being the better team over two legs of their playoff, they were undone in extra time against Shakhtar Donetsk and had to settle for a place in the Europa League instead.

It’s conceivable to think that the failure to reach the Champions League is having a lasting effect on their season as a whole. Monaco won just one of their first five league matches and only five out of 13 in total. That said, they remain only four points outside the European spots and six behind second placed Lens.

Where Monaco have been strong of late is at home. Since losing to Marseille in September, they have put together a run of five unbeaten which includes four wins. A goalless draw against PSV last time out sees them remain top of their Europa League group as well with a chance to clinch qualification next week.

If Kovac’s men are to make it four straight league wins at home then Wissam Ben Yedder will likely play a big part. He’s scored 44 league goals in two and a bit seasons including six in his last nine Ligue 1 matches.

Lille Preview – Can Lille improve their away form to get three points which would see them leapfrog their opponents?

Lille enjoyed a season for the ages last term, clinching what was just their fourth ever league title. Unfortunately for the club they have been unable to build on that and had to cope with losing the man who led them to glory moving on to pastures new. It’s been an unenviable job for Jocelyn Gourvennec and its proving to be the case so far.

Lille are one place and two points below their next opponents having won only four of their 13 games. Their last league victory was at the beginning of October, defeating Marseille 2-0 at home. What should have been a springboard to put a run of form together has not transpired. They’ve since taken just two points from their next four league games.

Their only away win in the league so far this campaign came against Strasbourg. They’ve also drawn two and lost four, including their most recent two matches on their travels.

Somewhat ironically, despite the team’s struggles, Jonathan David is the league’s top scorer. After a difficult first season at the club the Canadian international has netted eight goals including the opening strike in five games.

Monaco vs Lille Betting Advice

Neither of these teams would have expected to be in the bottom half but one of them could at least move into top 10 with a win on Friday. With the league so tightly packed outside of leaders PSG (six points between second and 11th) it won’t take much for one of these talented teams to get themselves involved in the top three if they can start putting a run together.

This has not been a happy hunting ground for Lille in recent years. Despite a win in the French League Cup in 2019, they haven’t won here in Ligue 1 here since 2009.

Key Facts – Monaco vs Lille Betting Tip

  • Monaco are unbeaten in their last five home games including four victories
  • Lille’s Jonathan David is the top scorer in Ligue 1 with eight goals
  • The last time Lille won away to Monaco in the league was back in 2009

There’s no doubt Monaco are showing improvement at home and although this will be a test for them, Lille have been poor on their travels. Back Kovac’s men to reel off a fourth straight win at home in the league.
