Preview: All eyes in Germany this weekend will fall on the contest at Borussia-Park between Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund. It is fourth versus third and while it is the away side who have bossed recent meetings, this latest renewal looks too close to call.

Borussia Monchengladbach Preview – Foals seeking end to Dortmund hoodoo?

The Foals must hate the sheer sight of their next opponents. Since a 3-1 victory at Borussia-Park in April 2014, Borussia Monchengladbach (4th – W14 D4 L5) have lost all ten meetings with Borussia Dortmund. Two of those were earlier in the season, losing 1-0 and 2-1 in league and cup respectively. Admittedly both were at Dortmund, and close, but the fact Gladbach were beaten both times only strengthens the argument that they retain something of an inferiority complex in this particular match-up.

If they are to finally break free of the Dortmund shackles, this weekend may well represent their best opportunity to do so in quite some time. At home Gladbach are formidable, failing to win only three of eleven said matches so far this season (W8 D2 L1) whilst scoring in each of the last ten, since a goalless draw with Schalke on Matchday 1. The last visiting team were Hoffenheim, whose late goal to earn a 1-1 draw snapped an eight-game winning streak at Borussia-Park for the hosts.

The response was encouraging at least, beating FC Augsburg 3-2 on the road last weekend to consolidate their position within the top four. It was another shaky performance defensively, however. Marco Rose’s side have now gone six without a clean sheet, with the previous five contests all featuring both teams scoring. Yet in Lars Stindl they possess a forward in red hot form, with four goals scored across his last three appearances – all coming in away matches, however.

Borussia Dortmund Preview – Favre striving for more solidity in defence?

With Bayern Munich’s pace atop the Bundesliga showing no signs of relenting, it is up to the chasing pack to remain in touch until someone upsets the apple cart. Borussia Dortmund (3rd – W14 D6 L4) have done just that lately, winning six of their last seven Bundesliga games and now sit four points off the summit. Victory on Saturday, which would make it an astonishing win number ten in a row versus Monchengladbach in the league, feels absolutely imperative.

It has been noticeable of late how much Lucien Favre has tried to shore things up from a defensive perspective. Possibly with the Champions League in mind – any suspect defending will get exposed there – but probably more so on the back of last month’s horror show in Leverkusen, where they contrived to lose 4-3 despite holding two separate leads. BVB have since reeled off three straight Bundesliga victories over Frankfurt (4-0), Werder Bremen (0-2) and, more recently, Freiburg (1-0) without conceding.

Wednesday does see Dortmund return to Europe, trying to defend a 2-1 first-leg advantage in Paris. We simply don’t know how much of a distraction that may prove to be here, however, the top of the league is so compact that they can ill-afford to lose focus. Travelling hasn’t been their speciality either, winning only 42% of the time this season (W5 D3 L4), while by way of comparable fixtures they did concede four on trips to Bayern Munich (4-0) and Bayer Leverkusen.

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

This is unquestionably the game of the entire weekend in Germany, as fourth hosts third with both keen to enhance their position not only within the Bundesliga title race but also within the top-four. Dortmund‘s record in this fixture is impeccable, though, winning the previous nine league meetings. However, Monchengladbach are imperious on their own patch having won eight of the last nine said games, and can even boast the scalp of leaders Bayern Munich.

Monchengladbach Vs Borussia Dortmund – Key Facts

  • A 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim in their most recent Bundesliga home game halted a winning streak of eight in said matches for Borussia Monchengladbach.
  • Away from home Borussia Dortmund have won fewer than half their Bundesliga matches thus far (W5 D3 L4), though did win four of the previous six (W4 L2).
  • April 2014 was the last time Borussia Monchengladbach recorded any victory over Borussia Dortmund, with the latter winning the previous ten meetings in all competitions (9 league and 1 cup).

Both teams clearly know where the goal is, although there is a fair amount of discrepancy between the two with Gladbach notching 20 fewer across the season. This has been largely compensated by a superior defence, though the difference is more minimal by comparison (27 vs 32). Plus, Dortmund have improved in this aspect recently by keeping four clean sheets in five Bundesliga games. Therefore, I am more inclined to think this could be a more cagey contest than some anticipate.
