This is one of the first real blockbuster ties of the Australian Open 2020. It sees defending champion Naomi Osaka, who was pretty fired up in her second round match, taking on young American sensation Cori Gauff. Will this be a straight forward march to the fourth round for the Champion or is a major upset on the cards?

Osaka aims for progress against toughest challenger yet

There was always the promise of this big collision happening at the Australian Open 2002. And here it is. Defending champion Naomi Osaka has some pressure to handle here against young Coco Gauff. Back in last year’s US Open, Osaka beat Gauff but showed tremendous humility in allowing the youngster to join her on court after the match in a wonderful act of sportsmanship.

Osaka did win the match 2-0 and never let her concentration waiver against the highly-hyped youngster. Saying that, Osaka is only 22, but Guaff is just 15 still. Osaka hasn’t dropped a set so far in Melbourne, breezing past Marie Bouzkova and then Saisai Zheng, both matches going to 6-2 6-4 scorelines. Osaka was visibly angry with herself against Zheng for some slips in standards.

Our betting prediction:

At the recent Brisbane International, Osaka did make a run to the semi finals, so she has been in great nick already this year. She was stopped in a really tight duel against eventual winner Karolina Pliskova in that final four matches. She did drop a set in all four matches in Brisbane, all tough games. She’s tightened up already in Melbourne.

Can Gauff cause more Grand Slam shockwaves?

In the opening round of the Australian Open 2020 Cori Gauff was up against veteran Venus Williams. Gauff collected the win in straight sets after edging the first set on a tie break. The youngster burst onto the scene last year with a run to the fourth round at Wimbledon and then a third round place at the US Open.

In that Wimbledon campaign she won her first ever match at a Slam in beating Venus Williams. After her win over Williams in the first round of this Australian Open, Gauff then had to dig deep in the second round. She dropped the first set against Sorana Cirstea, but turned things around and really dipped into her reserves to secure the win.

The thing here is that there is no pressure on Gauff at all. She is expected to lose. However, she probably isn’t expecting to lose herself. She has a great positive attitude and her past two Grand Slam experiences will mean that she is back stronger and better this year. She has some career ahead of her.
