The action from the Winter Gardens in Blackpool rolls on with this darts betting preview from the World Matchplay.

Nathan Aspinall is the favourite to take this opening round fixture at the tournament.

He lines up against Mervyn King and the winner of this will move the head to head with Gary Anderson or Stephen Bunting.

Nathan Aspinall Preview – Can “The Asp” land the victory?

Nathan Aspinall has only been to the World Matchplay Darts twice before in his short career.

On both of those previous occasions, he lost in the first round.

Last year was excellent from Aspinall.

A couple of highlights being a semi-final at the World Championship and reaching the Final of the Premier league.

This year his best returns have been a quarter Final place at The Masters and a Semi Final at the Premier League.

For this first round match on Monday at the World Matchplay, there is a quote of 4/6 on Aspinall * (odds recorded 22:14 GMT on July 18th).

With not too many of the major tournaments having been played this season, we really only have Players Championship form to look at.

There have been decent returns from “The Asp ” in those.

He went deep at Players Championship 19 and then winning a couple more matches at the next one.

Interestingly, this will be the first time that Aspinall has met veteran Mervyn King.

Our betting prediction:
Aspinall 10-7 Correct Score
7/1

So all in all, Aspinall has won six of his last eight matches, so looks the more likely of the two in this one.

The last major action he had was in the semi-finals of this year’s Premier League of Darts where he lost to Joao De Sousa.

Aspinall is a player that can track up the maximum pretty quickly.

So we would be happy to go for the 4/5 quote on Aspinall for Most 180s in this match* (odds recorded 22:14 GMT on July 18th).

We do think that the World Number 11 breaks through past the first round for the first time.

Mervyn King Preview – The King has a lot on his plate

55-year-old Merv King came out of nowhere this year to reach the final of The Masters.

That was a run that few would have seen coming. But while he didn’t win, it’s given him a decent record at the big tournaments this year.

That final at the Masters sits alongside a Fourth Round exit at the World Championship and a Fourth Round exit at the UK Open.

Despite having been knocking around the PDC since 2007, “The King” has never managed to win a title.

In total it’s been seven major finals that he has reached without having gotten any silverware.

In the match tonight for World Matchplay darts betting on Monday, King is a quote of 6/4 to win *(odds recorded 22:14 GMT on July 18th).

King didn’t qualify for last year’s edition but did reach the quarter finals in 2019.

But he has made it past the first round in just three of his last ten appearances in the main draw.

Mervyn King has found a little bit of extra consistency this season and has done well enough in Players Championship tournaments recently.

At 17 and 18 he posted a W4 L1 record in each of those, but this is, of course, a much bigger stage with a lot stronger competition.

The question for darts betting in this one, may simply be “how close can King get to Aspinall”?

An Aspinall 10-7 correct score is a quote of 10-7* (odds recorded 22:14 GMT on July 18th).

We think that could be about the right range looking at the form of the two.

Nathan Aspinall vs Mervyn King Betting Advice

Aspinall will probably be feeling a bit of pressure to get past the first round at the World Matchplay for the first time.

He is the stronger of the two players, without question and I think that he gets through.

The Over +16.5 Legs as a darts betting option in this one is a quote of 3/4* (odds recorded 22:14 GMT on July 18th).

Key Facts – Nathan Aspinall vs Mervyn King Betting Tip

  • Nathan Aspinall meets King for the first time
  • Nathan Aspinall has not been past the First Round before at the World Matchplay
  • Mervyn King has made it past the First Round in 3 of his last 10 appearances

We think that King can make just enough of a challenge to push towards that betting option.

As for the match outright we have to roll with the Aspinall option at 4/6* (odds recorded 22:14 GMT on July 18th).

This should be an interesting first match between the two players, but “The Asp” should have the extra bite.
