Newcastle United Preview – Can Newcastle make it three on the trot?
Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side will head into Sunday’s clash with Brighton in high spirits as The Magpies have won both of their opening matches of this new season, collecting wins against West Ham 2-0 away in last weekend’s Premier League opener, along with a midweek 1-0 home win over Championship outfit, Blackburn Rovers, in the League Cup.
Last weekend’s victory in the nation’s capital at West Ham was particularly important as it ended Newcastle’s six-match sequence without a win in the top flight, and they now return to St James’ Park where they lost just two of their last eight matches of last season.
Newcastle finished the season with an overall home record of 6-8-5 20/21 which was fairly solid and included seven clean sheets, while goals were hard to come by with 10 of Newcastle’s 19 home matches resulting in under 2.5 goals.
Brighton Preview – Can Brighton achieve mid-table finish?
Brighton finished the previous Premier League campaign in 15th place and seven points above the relegation zone but this appears to be the best that The Seagulls can hope for as they seek to further consolidate their position in the top flight this term.
The visitors have started this season on the back foot as they were handed a heavy 3-1 defeat at home to big-spending Chelsea and this followed a run of just three wins from their final 18 matches of last season’s Premier League campaign, so although they registered a last-day 2-1 win at Burnley last term, the prospects of an away win for Brighton here seems remote.
That said, Brighton also stand a fairly decent chance of not losing this match either as they finished last season with a solid and stubborn looking sequence of seven away matches without defeat – this included five draws and wins at Norwich City and Burnley, but also five of these seven matches resulted in under 2.5 goals too.
