Preview: Only against Tottenham Hotspur has Newcastle completed more league doubles than they have West Ham. The Magpies stand on the cusp of another on Saturday, when they entertain the Hammers at St James’ Park seeking a repeat of the 2-0 success they enjoyed at the London Stadium back in September.

Newcastle – Magpies at the double?

Steve Bruce is possibly the most scrutinised manager in the Premier League, so his relief was palpable when his Newcastle (W8 D8 L15) team ended a run of seven top-flight matches without a win last time out. Victory at Burnley, coming courtesy of super sub Allan Saint-Maximin, whose goal and assist inspired the Magpies to a come-from-behind win at Turf Moor, lifting them six points clear of danger in 17th.

Newcastle have now lost only one of their past six league matches (W1 D4), making themselves difficult to beat of late. However, with the guile and ingenuity of Saint-Maximin now back to complement the reliable finishing of Callum Wilson, with the club’s 10-goal leading scorer this season also making his long-awaited return from injury last time, there is a growing sense this team can kick on.

Another win this weekend, meanwhile, would see them register back-to-back league victories for only the second time all season. And while that may seem a long shot bearing in mind the meteoric rise of their opponents, it is worth remembering just how impressive the Magpies were in the reverse fixture, when goals from Wilson and Jeff Hendrick wrapped up a thoroughly deserved 2-0 success on the opening weekend.

West Ham – Jesse the new Messi?

In their last three league games, West Ham (W16 D7 L8) have done their very best to convince us all that a 3-0 scoreline is the most dangerous lead in football. Having relinquished said lead to draw 3-3 with Arsenal, the Hammers very nearly contrived to do the same against Wolves and Leicester, ultimately holding out to record successive 3-2 victories that keeps them clinging on to fourth and a Champions League place.

We could be witnessed a remarkable season in the flesh, and I am not merely talking about the collective heroics of this team to put themselves above the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and even reigning champions Liverpool in the table. Jesse Lingard’s sensational form since arriving on loan in January shows no signs of slowing down, taking his tally to 8 goals in 9 appearances in last week’s win over Leicester.

So impressive has the on-loan Manchester United attacker been that we hardly notice the absence of star striker Michail Antonio. Meanwhile, only Tomas Soucek has more league goals in 2020/21 than Lingard, who is seeking to score for the fourth consecutive game on Saturday. As for West Ham, they have lost only two of their last ten league games (W6 D2) – both defeats against the Manchester clubs.

Newcastle Vs West Ham Betting Advice

In each of their last three league games, away to Wolves and at home to Arsenal and Leicester, West Ham have held a 3-0 lead at some stage and not looked entirely convincing in any. Meanwhile, the last time they scored three or more goals in four consecutive games was in 1928. That only highlights the absurd hot streak this team is currently enjoying, with an inspired Jesse Lingard at the forefront.

Newcastle Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • West Ham have won only twice away to Newcastle in the Premier League in sixteen visits (D6 L8), last doing so in a 3-0 scoreline in December 2018.
  • Newcastle have scored two goals in each of their past two league games, while West Ham scored exactly three in each of their last three matches in the competition.
  • West Ham forward Jesse Lingard has 8 goals in 9 appearances since joining on loan in January, netting in each of their previous three Premier League games.

Believe it or not, Newcastle won the reverse fixture with plenty to spare. However, much has changed since then – the Magpies have regressed to 17th while West Ham audaciously challenge for a Champions League spot. There are signs of life from the Magpies, though, who have only lost once in six league games having netted four in their last two matches. For this reason, both teams to score looks a touch big.
