Norwich City – Smith’s side sinking without a trace?

The scrap to avoid dropp
ing into England second’s tier took a further twist during the week with Burnley defeating Everton. Pertinently for fans of Norwich, that meant the gap to Premier League safety hasn’t grown since their last fixture. That being last Saturday’s goalless draw away to Brighton, in which they were played off the park (xG from that game: BRI 2.86 – 0.58 NOR) but somehow stole a precious point.

Norwich are still seven points from safety, but have played a game more than Everton in 17th. Dean Smith has now failed to win 16 of 19 league games since taking charge in November, including the last eight (D2 L6). Yet he has stopped the rot of sorts, the draw on the South Coast halting a run of six consecutive losses. For his next trick, he will try to conjure the club’s first ever win in the Premier League over Burnley.

Key Stat: Norwich have lost each of their last three Premier League home games, the third instance of this happening this season. However, they are yet to lose four in a row at Carrow Road this term, following up those previous three-game losing runs with a 0-0 draw against Brighton and a 2-1 win over Everton.

Burnley – Clarets are on the charge?

A 3-2 victory at Turf Moor over Everton on Wednesday was one of those rare moments where everyone at the bottom of the table benefited. Aside from Everton, of course, who – as Frank Lampard succinctly put it – if they didn’t know they were in a scrap for top-flight survival, undoubtedly do now. For Sean Dyche and Burnley, it was a vital result, moving them within a point of clambering out of the drop zone.

That was a first win in six, ending a fun of four straight defeats. So not only was it significant within the context of the relegation picture, it could end up doing wonders for the Clarets confidence and self-belief. Meanwhile it was only their fourth league win of the campaign but third of 2022. Following it up with another could prove tricky, though, for a side with a dismal record of one win away from home all season (D6 L7).

Key Stat: Burnley have never conceded a Premier League goal against Norwich, registering a clean sheet across all three previous meetings (W2 D1) which includes their 2-0 win upon last visiting Carrow Road in June 2020.

Norwich Vs Burnley Betting Advice

Believe it or not, Burnley are favourites to win a Premier League game. As the away side, no less. All despite winning just four times in 2021-22, only one of which was away from home. Then you see who they are facing and it all starts to make a little more sense. In all seriousness, this is a huge encounter for both teams at Carrow Road – and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if neither emerged victorious.

Norwich City vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • It is one win from the last 12 Premier League matches versus Burnley for Norwich (D3 L8), who are winless in seven meetings since a 2-0 home win in April 2008.
  • Burnley haven’t conceded against Norwich in their three previous Premier League meetings (W2 D1), though were held scoreless in this season’s reverse fixture at Turf Moor.
  • This fixture pits the teams currently 20th and 18th against each other. No team has scored fewer home goals in England’s top tier this season than Norwich (10), while only the Canaries have netted fewer on the road than Burnley (12).

Norwich remain without a win in eight, scoring just 10 times in 14 home games. Burnley will be euphoric after their thrilling midweek win against Everton but that marked a first win in six for a side boasting the joint-fewest away wins in the Premier League (1, along with Everton), scoring just 12 in their 14 away fixtures so far. It all points towards a low-scoring, tense scrap in Norfolk, which is precisely how it unfolded between the teams at Turf Moor in October – a dour contest that ended goalless.
