The prize for Britain’s Kyle Edmund for winning his first-round match at the US Open is taking on Novak Djokovic.

While the result in this one does not look to be in too much doubt, this is a great occasion for Edmund.

With top-seed and red-hot tournament favourite Djokovic in fine form in the opening round, can Edmund at least get a set against the Serbian?

Novak Djokovic Preview – Djokovic on cruise control

As expected, Novak Djokovic won his opening match at the tournament, cruising past Damir Duzmhur in straight sets.

It was an easy 6-1 6-4 6-1 win that the Serbian took which is a bit of an ominous sign for his next opponent Edmund.

Last week at the Western & Southern Open Novak Djokovic was back among the titles.

So he is in form right now and is a massive odds-on favourite to win this fixture.

He is at 1/3 odds-on for a 3-0 win in set betting for the match* (odds taken 02:49 GMT Wednesday 2nd September).

This season, Djokovic is playing for his fourth US Open title.

He has won five of the last six Grand Slam tournaments played, including this year’s Australian Open.

At last year’s US Open Djokovic was playing for a title defence, but never made it past the fourth round.

That was after a run of eleven appearances at Flushing Meadows with him having at least reached the semi finals.

The match against Edmund is expected to be easy for him and there is a Djokovic -9.5 option in Games Handicap for 21/20* (odds taken 02:49 GMT Wednesday 2nd September).

Kyle Edmund Preview – Big experience for Edmund

Well, this is a great opportunity for Kyle Edmund to showcase himself at the US Open.

This will actually be the sixth meeting between the two players and Edmund is W1 L5 against the Serbian.

The shock result in that head to head sequence happened at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid event in 2019, the Brit winning over three sets.

Later that year Edmund did take a set off Djokovic when they met at Wimbledon, the letter winner 3-1.

This will also be the second US Open meeting between Edmund and Djokovic as it was a straight-sets victory for the Serbian in 2016 at the round of sixteen stage.

That was the best ever effort produced by Kyle Edmund at the US Open.

Kyle Edmund has improved on his last two appearances at the US Open by reaching the second round this year.

Edmund was up against Alexander Bublik on the opening day of action at the US Open 2020 and took a 3-1 win after dropping the first set.

It was actually a fairly tight match until the fourth set in that match.

For those interested in Edmund grabbing a set in this one, a Djokovic 3-1 set betting option is at 7/2* (odds taken 02:49 GMT Wednesday 2nd September).

We are not going to be entertaining that too much.

Novak Djokovic vs Kyle Edmund Betting Advice

The big threat of Kyle Edmund is when he gets his big, big serve working.

Back at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament last week, Edmund crashed in his opening match against Kevin Anderson having taken the first step.

It hasn’t been a bad season from Edmund, who claimed a title in New York back in February.

This is a different level of opponent and we are siding with a straightforward win for Djokovic.

Key Facts – Novak Djokovic vs Kyle Edmund Betting Tip

  • Novak Djokovic is W5 L1 in the head to head with Edmund
  • Novak Djokovic won the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati tournament on the weekend
  • Kyle Edmund beat Djokovic in Madrid in 2018

One Djokovic starts figuring out an opponent he barely leaves any room open.

The most likely chance that he would drop a set in this match would be in the opener.

We just don’t see it however and a Djokovic win should come. We are going under 27.5 Games Total for a punt at Evens* (odds taken 02:49 GMT Wednesday 2nd September).
