Rybankina on the charge

Kazakhstani Elena Rybankina has made a cracking start to 2020 having already been two finals. She opened the new calendar year reaching the final of the Shenzhen Open where she lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova.

But Rybankina bounced straight back to win the title in Hobart the following week.

After a third-round exit at the Australian Open to Ash Barty, Rybankina has been back in the groove in St Petersburg.

She opened with an excellent first-round win over Katerina Siniakova in straight sets and then did the same to Fiona Ferro in the second round.

This on paper looks like a very favourable quarter-final draw for the 20-year-old. There have been impressive stats from her.

Before St Petersburg she had won 70% of first serves this season and 78% of service games. She’d been ruthless in racking up 70 aces in three tournaments as well.

Can Dodin keep hot momentum going?

This will be the first-ever meeting between Rybakina and Dodin. The French player is one of the qualifiers who came through to make the main draw of this St Petersburg event.

After carrying next to no form this year before this tournament, Dodin has come into the draw firing on all cylinders.

The 23-year-old, ranked 159th in the world, was a losing qualifier at the Australian Open and then lost in the second round of an ITF level event in France. That’s all that she had under her belt before this tournament.

But she opened in blistering fashion in the main draw taking a 6-2, 6-2 opening victory over Viktoria Kuzmova.

Then came one of the biggest results of her career. Dodin beat 4th seed Johanna Konta in straight sets in the second round.

Dodin did well to outlast Konta in the last round, even though the Brit looks nowhere near on top of her game.

But credit to Dodin, that was a big win against one of the top twenty players in the world. But we can’t help feel this is the end of the St Petersburg road for her.
