Slavia Prague bring with them a two goal lead from the first leg to Athens, so Panathinaikos have it all to do if they are to continue their European run this season.

Panathinaikos Preview – Do Pana have the quality to overturn first leg defeat and continue in Europe?

It is five years since Panathinaikos last played a European game. That was in the Europa League and they made it to the playoff round only to lose out to Athletic Bilbao – losing 4-2 on aggregate. It’s been a long wait since and it is fair to say their return to continental competition was not how they would have wanted it to be. A 2-0 defeat in the Czech Republic last week has left them up against progressing to the playoff tie and their aim of playing in the group stages.

Ivan Jovanovic has been in charge for just over a year – guiding Pana to fourth spot in the Greek Super League. A credible effort in his first season in charge. They did, however, still finish over 20 points behind arch rivals and champions, Olympiakos.

Pana’s domestic season doesn’t start for another 10 days so this will be just their second competitive game and they will need to be a lot sharper than they were seven days ago. The Athens club will be looking to their support to lead them to a famous comeback.
One of the players who will be experiencing that for the first time is Slovenian striker Andraz Sporar. He was the statement signing in the summer, joining from Sporting Lisbon having been on loan to Middlesbrough last season.

Slavia Prague Preview – Will Slavia complete the job as they look for another European adventure?

Slavia Prague have enjoyed European competition in recent times. Since 2018/19, the Czechs have reached the group stage of the Champions League, two quarter-final appearances in the Europa League, and another run to the last eight in the previous campaign – this time in the Europa Conference League. Josip Trisovsky has overseen all of this progress along with sustained dominance domestically.

So it was somewhat of a surprise to see Slavia slip to second place in their league last season, finishing five points behind the eventual champions Viktoria Plzen. That sees them miss out on potential Champions League qualification, but they will be hoping to maintain their strong record in this lesser European competition.

Unlike their opponents, Slavia have had a couple of league games already – but they have found themselves winning one and losing the other. The 4-1 victory at home to Zlin last weekend was the perfect response to an opening day defeat away to Hradec Kralove.

There have been a couple of significant losses over the summer which is always the danger for teams who enjoy successful campaigns, particularly in Europe. The frustrating thing for supporters is that despite bringing in over £14m in fees, they club have spent around a seventh of that which is bound to impact the quality on the park.

Panathinaikos vs Slavia Prague Betting Advice

Last week was pretty much an indication of where these two teams are just now. Panathinaikos are returning to European competition for the first time in five seasons whilst their opponent’s have enjoyed excellent success in that time at various levels.

Pana have to try and find a way to combat that otherwise it will be their opponents progressing to the playoff stage, where they will face either Spartak Trnava or Rakow Czestochowa. The Polish club lead 2-0 heading into that second leg but it does look a favourable tie for either of these teams.
