We’ve reached the 1st leg stage of the Europa League play-offs on Thursday night and our next preview features a clash between Dutch club, PSV, and Cypriot outfit, Apollon, as the betting tips continue at the Philips Stadion.
PSV Prediction – Can Espanyol continue march in Europe?
PSV head into this 1st leg of their Europa League play-off clash against Cypriot side, Apollon, unbeaten on the domestic front after the first 3 matches of the new Dutch Eredivisie season, with the hosts gaining 2 wins and 1 draw to date.
The hosts have recorded early domestic wins over Den Haag 3-1 at home and a 2-0 win away at Heracles on the weekend, and they head into this crucial home tie with Apollon having put together a 5-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
The Dutch club entered the Europa League at the 3rd qualifying round stage where they registered a narrow 1-0 win on aggregate against Norwegian outfit, Haugesund, which consisted of a 1-0 win away in Norway in the 1st leg and then held their opponents to a 0-0 draw at their Philips Stadion.
This time, PSV hold home advantage in this 1st leg but they’ll be aware that they’ll need to make a vast improvement upon recent results on home turf in this competition as they’ve failed to win any of their last 5 ties.
Apollon Prediction – Can Apollon cause upset in Netherlands ?
As the Cypriot domestic season hasn’t started yet (it’s due to commence this weekend), Apollon’s pre-season preparations were cut short by their participation in the early qualifying rounds of the Europa League where they’ve progressed to the play-offs stage.
Apollon entered this competition at the 1st qualifying round stage where they posted a convincing 6-0 aggregate win over Lithuanian side, Kauno Zalgiris, winning 2-0 away and a 4-0 romp at home, but this was followed by a much tighter affair against Irish side, Shamrock Rovers.
Indeed, Apollon were handed a 2-1 defeat away from home in the 1st leg at the Tallaght Stadium and in the return leg, Apollon needed extra time in which to record a 3-1 win as they eventually ran out 4-3 winners on aggregate.
In the 3rd qualifying round, Apollon swept aside Austrian outfit, Austria Vienna, with apparent ease as they registered a 5-2 win on aggregate against their opponents with a 2-1 win in Vienna in the 1st leg before finishing the job with a 3-1 home win.
But with just 3 away wins from their last 8 ties in the Europa League, Apollon are far from guaranteed of getting a result at PSV on Thursday night.
Key-Facts – PSV v Apollon
- PSV are unbeaten in their last 5 matches in all competitions
- Apollon have won just 3 of their last 8 away ties in the Europa League
- PSV and Apollon have never played each other before in any competition
Betting Tips Verdict
PSV are starting to gather momentum now and should grab a 1st leg lead at home here, and possibly also cover the asian handicap line too.
