Preview: All change for Schalke, in terms of the manager anyway. The Royal Blues have a new man at the helm and his first task will be halting an 18-game winless run in the Bundesliga away to RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

RB Leipzig Preview Three points expected but without clean sheet?

Julian Nagelsmann and his RB Leipzig team begun the new Bundesliga season promisingly enough with a comfortable 3-1 victory inside their Red Bull Arena over Mainz. They were unable to record successive wins though, denied at the BayArena after a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. A contest in which the visitors were marginally the better side, at least according to Expected Goals: xG BAY 0.91 – 1.16 RBL.

Die Rotten Bullen are expected to make a swift return to winning ways this weekend, though, at home to a Schalke side currently on the longest winless run (18 games) in the Bundesliga. Nagelsmann will be taking nothing for granted, and for good reason, after seeing his team toil on their own patch towards the end of last term when failing to win any of their final six home league games (D5 L1).

Furthermore, it was Schalke who inflicted one of only two home league defeats on RB Leipzig in 2019/20. So there are enough red flags. And if they are to be celebrating come Saturday evening, it is likely because they have outscored the opposition: last season seen them fail to keep a clean sheet in all but two home games, with the host’s rearguard breached in each of the last seven Bundesliga matches inside Red Bull Arena.

Schalke Preview – Baptism of fire for latest Royal Blues manager?

The writing had been well and truly on the wall even towards the latter stages of last season, when Schalke closed out another dismal Bundesliga campaign in 12th – a position that flattered them, after finishing 2019/20 without managing a single victory through their final sixteen league fixtures. It was quite startling, therefore, that the club didn’t move swiftly to replace head coach David Wagner.

Any lingering hope invested in the former Huddersfield Town manager turning his sinking ship around in Gelsenkirchen was extinguished almost as soon as this season had begun. An 8-0 shellacking away to Bayern Munich served only to remind those in charge that little had changed during the off-season. By the end of the following week, Wagner was gone. His final act a 3-1 home loss to Werder Bremen.

Former Augsburg manager Manuel Baum is the new man tasked with improving the team’s fortunes. His first port of call will be convincing a collective which hasn’t won a Bundesliga contest since January (D6 L12) that they are actually capable of winning football matches. Moreover, we need to hark back to November of last year, in a 2-1 scoreline in Bremen, for their most recent away triumph (D4 L8 since).

RB Leipzig Vs Schalke Betting Advice

A fresh change of manager can often make for a volatile betting proposition, with the fabled ‘new manager bounce’ often working wonders. Schalke, who are officially under new management for the first time, will hope this is in evidence at the Red Bull Arena. Yet this is a side in dire form, which has lost its opening two league games by a combined aggregate of 1-11, facing a team with genuine title aspirations.

RB Leipzig Vs Schalke – Key Facts

  • In the Bundesliga last season, 82% (15 out of 17 games) of RB Leipzig‘s home matches featured at least one goal for both teams.
  • Having lost their first two league games of 2020/21, Schalke are now up to 18 Bundesliga matches without winning (D6 L12) since beating B. Monchengladbach 2-0 at home on 17 January 2020.
  • RB Leipzig have failed to win either of the last two home league meetings between the sides (D1 L1), succumbing 3-1 to The Royal Blues here last season.

A respectable defeat seems the best the visitors can hope to achieve. RB Leipzig are too short to back in the Match Odds betting, though. A more attractive option is a home win without a clean sheet, something they managed on five occasions last term (they only won seven times on home soil). Schalke, meanwhile, netted in more than half (9/17) of their away fixtures, which included three in victory here. 3-1 RB Leipzig.
