Preview: Sunday’s La Liga encounter at Bentio Villamarin could prove decisive in this season’s top-four battle. Real Betis and Atletico Madrid are separated by just a point, in third and fifth respectively, with the latter looking to make it a league double after easily winning the reverse fixture 3-0 in Madrid.

Real Betis – Cup success and top-four still on?

Four wins from their past six league outings has supporters dreaming of a return to the Champions League next season. Last week’s bitter loss in the Seville derby though, losing 2-1 away at second-place Sevilla, was among two losses in this sequence and means Manuel Pellegrini’s men come into Sunday’s crunch clash at Benito Villamarin still in the top-four but boasting only a one point buffer on opponents Atletico Madrid.

Pressure is firmly on then. Although progress to the Copa del Rey final on Thursday, drawing 1-1 on the night with Rayo Vallecano but winning 3-2 on aggregate, will have lifted some of that anxiety. Los Verdiblancos have now lost one of the last seven matches (W4 D2 L1), so will take some beating. Especially as La Liga hosts, having secured maximum points from seven of their last ten home league games.

Key Stat: Real Betis have only lost four of thirteen La Liga home games in 2021-22, however, all four saw them beaten without scoring a goal (vs Celta Vigo, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Villarreal).

Atletico Madrid – Simeone’s men to make it three wins to nil on the spin?

Successive league victories has pushed Atletico Madrid firmly back into top-four contention, and another on Sunday will see them leapfrog their opponents into those coveted Champions League spots. It is probably best they don’t get too far ahead of themselves, though, for this was a team that dropped points in seven of ten La Liga outings (D1 L6) prior to 3-0 and 2-0 wins against Osasuna and Celta Vigo.

Those wins were also significant for another reason. Having won both to nil, Atletico have now registered as many clean sheets across their last two La Liga outings than in thirteen previous in the competition. Moreover, that 3-0 scoreline in Osasuna marked a first defensive shutout of the season away from home. Diego Simeone’s men had conceded in all 12 prior away league games, and at least twice in six.

Key Stat: Eight of the last nine La Liga away games for Atletico Madrid saw a minimum of three goals, including all of their last five. The last three of which seeing them score multiple times but only manage one win (W1 D1 L1).

Real Betis Vs Atletico Madrid Betting Advice

Atletico Madrid have already gotten the better of Real Betis once this season, a 3-0 win at the Wanda Metropolitano in October as convincing as the scoreline suggests (xG: ATM 3.31 – 0.41 RBT). So Sunday’s guests to the Benito Villamarin – where Betis have won seven of the last ten home league games – are unlikely to be intimidated by their surroundings, especially having lost only once away to Betis since 2006 (W8 D3).

Real Betis Vs Atletico Madrid – Key Facts:

  • An emphatic 3-0 victory when the sides met earlier in the season means Atletico Madrid have won four of the last five La Liga meetings, drawing the other 1-1 in Betis last term.
  • Real Betis last recorded a home league win against Atletico Madrid in 2006 (D3 L8 thereafter). Los Verdiblancos boast wins in seven of their last ten home La Liga outings, though, hinting at a first H2H victory in more than 15 years.
  • Atletico Madrid are also unreliable on their travels this season, winning just five of 13 away league games this season and only one of the most recent six (D1 L4).

It will also be a short turnaround for Betis following their Copa del Rey exertions on Thursday, when they left it late to book their place in the final. Even so, are we to trust an Atletico with one away league win in the last six? Losing four. A side that has conceded in 12 of 13 La Liga away games this term? It also makes little sense to back the draw. Betis have drawn one of the last 21 in the league, Atletico one of the last 14.
