A hard-fought win away to Real Valladolid coupled with Barcelona losing against Valencia mean that Zinedine Zidane’s men are clear at the top of La Liga for the first time in a while. It may only be three points and there are still 17 games left to play but it does feel significant with everything that is happening at the Nou Camp just now. There was also a hugely embarrassing defeat to Cultural Leonesa in the Copa Del Rey midweek. The loss to a third tier side has put Simeone under the microscope along with their other shortcomings this season.

A lack of goals, lack of chance creation and general lack of threat is the biggest reason why Atleti are now 10 points behind Real heading into this weekend. Considering they were anticipating a title challenge coming into this year it’s a real failure of all concerned in what were two very winnable games to start things off.

Of course, should Atletico get a win at the home of their rivals then seven points is not insurmountable but there would be little confidence in them being able to sustain a run of form that would see them go close on the evidence we have seen so far.

The Supercopa final earlier this month finished 0-0 after 90 minutes making it the third goalless draw in the last four matches between the clubs and six of the last seven have went under 2.5 goals. With Atletico really struggling in attack this season (just 22 goals in 21 league games) and the goal having dried up for Real as well of late (five of their last seven have went under 2.5 in the league) that looks to be another very solid bet on this occasion.
