Preview: Spanish champions Real Madrid conclude their 2021/22 domestic campaign nice and early, handing them ample time to rest up and prepare for their Champions League final against Liverpool. Aiming to capitalise on any loss of focus among the home ranks are a Real Betis side which won’t want to relinquish fifth place on the final day.

Real Madrid – Focus already turned to UCL final?

Los Blancos has received a boost ahead of their upcoming Champions League final against Liverpool on May 28, after La Liga pencilled in their final La Liga game of 2021/22 for this Friday. That leaves them with eight days of recuperation before facing the quadruple-chasing Reds, who will only have six between their last league fixture and the date in Paris. Carlo Ancelotti may wish to rotate his team regardless.

Just four first-team regulars begun the recent 1-1 draw at Cadiz, with Ancelotti handing several the night off as Real dropped points for the second away game running. Here at Santiago Bernabeu, though, the dominant La Liga champions have won each of their last three league fixtures ‘to nil’. These includes thrashing of Espanyol and Levante, beating the teams in 13th and 19th, respectively, 4-0 and 6-0.

Key Stat: Real Madrid have been ahead at both half-time and full-time in all three previous La Liga home matches. They were four goals up at the interval in the very latest of them: the 6-0 demolition of Levante.

Real Betis – Verdiblancos keen to retain fifth spot?

Not even a routine 2-0 victory at home to Granada was enough to preserve the team’s push for a top-four finish. Subsequently, Real Betis are resigned to finishing no higher in the league than their current position of fifth. They can still finish in sixth, though, should they fail to take anything from an away game against Real Madrid for the first time in five visits (W2 D2) and Real Sociedad overcome Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

As previously mentioned, Betis’ record in this fixture is mightily impressive, going four successive away meetings without so much as conceding. Should, we some are expecting, their hosts field another weakened side, odds of 6/1 about the visitors shutting out the La Liga champions will look big. This, after all, is a side unbeaten in five successive away league games (W2 D3) having kept a clean sheet in four.

Key Stat: Real Betis have kept six clean sheets across their last ten league games, with four of these shutouts earned away from home. All but one of those aforementioned away clean sheets came in 0-0 scorelines, though.

Real Madrid Vs Real Betis Betting Advice

Even had Real Madrid not wrapped up a 35th Spanish league title with games to spare, this was always going to be a difficult assignment. Carlo Ancelotti’s side appear to have been priced up very generously, with quotes of 4/5 about a team at least 12-points better than everyone else in the country, that has won its last three home matches without conceding and by an aggregate of 12-0, looking juicy.

Real Madrid Vs Real Betis – Key Facts:

  • Newly crowned champions of Spain they are, but Real Madrid’s last victory against Real Betis here in Madrid dates back to March 2017, failing to so much as score across four subsequent head-to-heads at the Bernabeu (D2 L2).
  • The previous two league meetings in Madrid ended 0-0. Meanwhile, three of Real Betis’ last four away fixtures finished scoreless, while Real Madrid haven’t conceded in their last three as hosts.
  • There also wasn’t much goalmouth action when the sides met first time around in 2021/22. Full-back Dani Carvahal popping up with his only goal of the season to settle a tight contest in Seville last August in Real Madrid’s favour (0-1 scoreline).

Don’t be fooled though. Betis are unbeaten across four recent visits to Madrid when taking on Los Blancos, conceding zero goals in these meetings. It is a run so good, so unlikely, that it inevitably has to end soon. But with the hosts not likely to be at full strength and Betis in more than reasonable form, in particular on their travels, I believe there is some mileage to the 21/20 about the away side avoiding defeat.
