Real Madrid Preview – Season threatening to unravel?

One of three teams in La Liga who remain unbeaten at home in 2019-20, Real Madrid (2nd – W16 D8 L3) have certainly turned their Santiago Bernabeu into the fortress of old. Zidane’s men have averaged 2.38 points per home game thus far (W9 D4), securing more than half (5) of their victories by keeping a clean sheet. It will be interesting, therefore, seeing how the lack of a crowd affects them here, with this among a number of fixtures in Spain to be staged ‘behind closed doors’ for at least the next two weeks.

Despite the absence of supporters inside the ground, there are no excuses should Zidane’s team fail to overcome favourable opponents who are struggling towards the bottom of La Liga. Admittedly, Real are themselves struggling of late. Claiming a paltry four points from the last twelve available (W1 D1 L2) has dropped them back to second, two points behind leaders Barcelona, after losing their latest encounter 2-1 away to Real Betis.

That is now two defeats in three rounds of La Liga, having previously lost only once in the opening 24. There was also a 2-1 loss at home to Man City in Europe amidst all this, so this has truly been a troubling period for Los Blancos, who simply must return to winning ways this weekend if they are to approach next week’s return leg with any semblance of confidence. Unfortunately, they will have to do so without the injured duo of Thibaut Courtois and Marcelo.

Real Madrid Win By 4 Or More Goals

Eibar Preview – Relegation zone could soon loom large?

One of three teams who have won on just one occasion away from home all season, Eibar (16th – W7 D6 L13) will need to produce something extraordinary for them to double that meagre tally this weekend and, in turn, become the first team to inflict defeat on Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Playing in front of an empty stadium may aid their cause slightly. Shocks have been few and far between in this fixture, however, having lost on four of five prior visits to Real Madrid in La Liga.

A 1-1 draw in October 2016 the only occasion Eibar have avoided defeat away to Los Blancos. Jose Luis Mendilibar, the coach, would almost certainly settle for a similar outcome here when taking into account his team’s current plight. Defeat last time out, losing 2-1 at home to Real Sociedad, made it one win in seven (W1 D2 L4) as the Basque club remain two points above the bottom three following a dire run of four defeats in five.

Among those recent losses being a trip to Camp Nou to take on the other title contender, Barcelona. A resounding 5-0 scoreline the final outcome – easily their heaviest loss of 2019-20 – meaning they have now faced the current top-two sides three times this season, losing all three by an aggregate of 0-12. That includes a 4-0 scoreline in the reverse of this fixture. No team, meanwhile, are averaging fewer goals on their travels (0.69), scoring just 8 times in 13 outings.

Real Madrid Vs Eibar Betting Advice

Not only within the context of La Liga, where they trail Bracelona by two points in the title race, but also in the knowledge that momentum needs to be built ahead of next week’s pivotal Champions League contest in England with Man City, this is surely a must-win fixture for Real Madrid. Zidane’s men are incredibly short odds to oblige, but oblige they should having dominated recent home meetings with Eibar, winning four of five since 2015.

Real Madrid Vs Eibar – Key Facts

  • Real Madrid have gone their opening thirteen home league games of the season without losing (W9 D4). Five of their nine victories, meanwhile, were ‘to nil’.
  • Eibar have won only one of thirteen away league games (W1 D5 L7) since the start of the campaign, averaging 0.62 goals per game on the road.
  • This will be the sixth La Liga encounter between the two clubs in Madrid, with Eibar still searching for its first win (D1 L4). Three of their visits resulted in them losing without scoring.

Real Madrid have beaten Eibar ‘to nil’ on three occasions as the home side, and that selection makes sense again. Eibar are the joint-lowest scorers away from home this season. Meanwhile, Los Blancos secured five of their nine home wins this season without conceding a goal, with the Real defence comfortably outperforming all others in La Liga this season.
