Real Madrid – Euro exit can benefit La Liga title defence?

“Now we rest and think of La Liga.” The message was clear from Zidane after watching his Real Madrid team convincingly ousted from the Champions League on Wednesday following a 2-0 defeat in England against Chelsea, who progressed 3-1 on aggregate. The 13-time European champions could have zero complaints. Indeed they were fortunate the final scoreline didn’t reflect the one-sided nature of the contest.

Perhaps the only positive for Real Madrid (W22 D8 L4) was the return of club captain Sergio Ramos, whose influence could prove telling during the season run-in, which is likely to be tense and far from straightforward. Fourth-place Sevilla await on Sunday before encounters with Granada (Europa League quarter-finalist), Athletic Bilbao (recently defeated Sevilla away) and Villarreal (Europa League semi-finalist).

Los Blancos are unbeaten in La Liga since the end of January, however, registering 34 of a possible 42 points since sustaining the last of three home losses in 2020-21 to Levante. Last week’s routine 2-0 win here in Madrid against Osasuna – who were limited to a measly 0.07 xG – making it one goal conceded across their previous six league outings (W4 D2) and a fourth successive clean sheet in all.

Sevilla – Lopetegui eyeing up fourth straight away win?

The sheer fact Sevilla (W22 D4 L8), on the back of seven wins in their previous eight league games, could have moved to within three points of the La Liga summit with victory over Athletic Bilbao last Monday, seemed to catch everyone by surprise. In fact, it was probably more of a shock that they didn’t, in fact, make any inroads whatsoever, instead beaten at the death by a stoppage-time suckerpunch.

That 1-0 scoreline marked a first defeat in the league since early March for Julen Lopetegui and Sevilla, having shaded the contest from an xG standpoint (SEV 1.35 – 0.72 ATB). They do, however, remain unbeaten away from home in four having won each of the last three – all by the narrowest of margins – against Celta Vigo (3-4), Levante (0-1) and Real Sociedad (1-2).

When it has come to the crunch games against their near rivals, though, it has been largely underwhelming so far with one win from five such meetings (W1 D1 L3). They did get the better of Atletico Madrid last month, a 1-0 win at Sanchez-Pizjuan, but this represents one last opportunity to strike a meaningful blow before a couple of tricky encounters with Valencia, Villarreal and relegation-battlers Alaves.

Real Madrid Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

This season, all five matches versus the current top-four sides for Sevilla returned Under 2.5 Goals. Meanwhile Zidane’s men looked out on their feet on Wednesday, struggling to create a chance of note, and last scored more than once in a home league game in December (11 games ago). But did keep a clean sheet for the fourth La Liga game running last time out, having shipped one goal in the last six.

Real Madrid Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • A 1-0 victory at Sanchez Ramon-Pizjuan in December earned Real Madrid their fourth successive La Liga victory over Sevilla, who last won away in Madrid in 2008 (L11 since).
  • Barcelona were the last side to score against Real Madrid in La Liga, Los Blancos allowing just one goal to be conceded across their past six league matches (W4 D2).
  • Celta Vigo are the only team to net more than once past Sevilla in their past eight La Liga games, remaining unbeaten across the last four away from home (W3 D1).

Sevilla average a modest 1.44 goals across the season in Spain but boast one of the division’s meaner backlines, with a meagre 0.79 conceded. Julen Lopetegui’s side have registered six away clean sheets so far, and conceded no more than once in seven of their past eight league games, home and away. Considering their energy levels should be superior, a small wager on the visitors could prove shrewd at the odds.
