Andy Murray makes his return to action this week as he has accepted a wild card for Cincinnati.

After pulling out of the singles tournament at the Olympics, this will be his first singles action since Wimbledon.

35-year-old Richard Gasquet had to get through a couple of qualification rounds to make the main draw at ATP Cincinnati.

So it has already been a busy time for him, but it means he has match sharpness.

The two wins that Gasquet collected in qualification is the first time that he has played since the end of July.

It is, therefore, the first action that he has had on a hard court surface in a while.

The Frenchman hasn’t been on a hard court since a second-round loss in Dubai back in mid-March.

Andy Murray made his big competitive return after another lay off, at this year’s Wimbledon.

He scraped through the first two rounds before being demolished by Denis Shapolovalov.

Murray was then supposed to play in the singles at the Olympic Games.

But he withdrew from that before the start because of a torn muscle.

So that also leaves him a little short of current action, just like Gasquet.

Interestingly all but two of the previous twelve meetings between Murray and Gasquet have needed more than two sets.

Those triumphs happened in 2008 and 2011. There’s no reason to suspect that he will add a third.

It has been eight matches this season for Murray on the ATP Tour.

Notably, all but one of those losses were against players who are currently ranked 12th or higher in the world.

His First Round opponent in Cincinnati this week is ranked outside the Top 50.
