Scotland – First WC qualification for 24 years tantalising close?

Steve Clarke will hope to mark three years in charge with a victory on Wednesday that would set up a qualification decider against fellow Britons, Wales. The former Kilmarnock boss has turned Scotland into a competitive force once again – something Tartan Army supporters have longed for – with their successful EURO 2020 efforts serving both as inspiration and proof of what this group is capable of achieving.

The Scots were never a match for Denmark over the course of qualifying. However, a stunning 2-0 win here against the Danes ensured second place with room to spare. That one of seven victories across ten qualifiers (D2 L1), and their sixth without conceding. Moreover, they can approach this clash in upbeat mood after stringing together an eight-match unbeaten run (W6) since losing in Copenhagen last September.

Key Stat: Scotland enter into these play-offs in excellent form having gone their past eight international matches without losing (W6 D2), since a 2-0 loss away in Copenhagen against Denmark in September 2021.

Ukraine – Can football provide an uplifting distraction?

Amid an ongoing crisis back home, and having fallen to a 3-1 loss upon visiting Scotland for the one and only time nearly 15 years ago, it would have to be regarded as one of the finest footballing achievements in their history were Ukraine to qualify for the World Cup finals in Qatar. A ten-game unbeaten streak (W4 D6) that stretches back to September of last year suggests they have every chance of doing just this.

The Blue and Yellows are here on account of their 2-0 win away to Bosnia in their final group stage qualifying game, which, coupled with Finland’s loss to France, meant they snatched second place in Group D at the last. That they did so as one of seven sides not to lose a single qualifier shows they aren’t to be underestimated, holding World Cup holders France to a pair of 1-1 draws in Kyiv and, notably, Paris.

Key Stat: Just one of Ukraine’s 10 previous international matches (friendlies included) saw them preserve their clean sheet, with nine of these encounters seeing them score as well as concede.

Scotland Vs Ukraine Betting Advice

When the draw was made, this always appeared a favourable outcome for Scotland. Victory at Hampden Park moves them a step closer to their first appearance at a World Cup since 1998. Their record of late has been excellent meanwhile, winning six of the last eight (D2). However, they did draw their only games of 2022 so far versus Austria and Poland. Both were score-draws, which is something Ukraine know all about.

Scotland Vs Ukraine – Key Facts:

  • For only the third time, Scotland and Ukraine meet on the international stage. Both prior encounters were won by the home side, with Scotland 3-1 victors in Glasgow in October 2007 for a EURO qualifier.
  • Both teams boast eye-catching unbeaten runs. Scotland haven’t lost any of their last eight (W6 D2) and none as hosts since October 2019 (W8 D4). Meanwhile Ukraine are unbeaten in ten (W4 D6), last seen losing on their travels in June 2021 (W4 D4).
  • Scotland’s two matches in 2022 both resulted in score draws, while none of Ukraine’s six draws during their ongoing ten-game unbeaten streak were goalless affairs.

Ukraine are also in fine form. Recent friendlies against club sides Monchengladbach, Empoli and Rijeka have seen them extend their unbeaten run to ten (W4 D6). That comprises six draws though, all of them scoring ones. Therefore, bearing in mind Scotland’s backline has been breached on both outings so far this year, we could be looking at a another instance where both teams oblige in front of goal.
