Preview: Friday’s La Liga offering takes us to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan where Sevilla will be desperate to halt a four-game barren streak in La Liga. Unfortunately for them, opponents Granada arrive in resurgent form, seeking to avoid a third successive loss at this venue that would see them extend their unbeaten league run to three matches.

Sevilla – From title contenders to tussling for top-four?

As predicted, the presence of Sevilla – a combative, resolute outfit more renowned for being incredibly tough to break down defensively than for any attacking exuberance – was enough to keep Barcelona honest last time out at Camp Nou. Yet a slender 1-0 loss for Julen Lopetegui’s side marked another blow in a long list of them, in their quest to end the campaign in the La Liga Champions League places.

To be fair on them, only a moment of sheer brilliance from 19-year-old Pedri did for them in Catalonia. However, Sevilla have now gone four league games without winning (D3 L1), scoring the once, and taken maximum points from only two of their last ten (W2 D7 L1). So these are dispiriting times, now only four points clear in fourth of fifth-placed Real Betis having recently been knocked out of Europe by West Ham.

Key Stat: Along with Real Madrid, Sevilla are still to lose at home in La Liga in 2021-22 (W10 D4). Furthermore, they would only fail to beat two teams currently in the bottom half of the table (Friday’s opponents Granada sit 16th) at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, recording five wins and two draws in these fixtures.

Granada – New manager bounce in full effect?

For the second time in as many matches, Granada had to come from behind to earn a positive outcome, clawing back a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at home to Rayo Vallecano last weekend. It followed on from their second-half heroics in Alaves before the international break, in which Luis Suarez (not that Luis Suarez) netted a dramatic late winner to snap a ten-match winless streak (D3 L7) in La Liga.

Those results against Alaves and Vallecano has injected life into the club’s survival hopes. Head coach Ruben Torrecilla deserves immense credit for getting a tune from this team so quickly, having only signed on as coach in March while the team were in absolute free-fall. Yet they’ve now scored five in his three-game tenure (W1 D1 L1), the same total as in their ten previous league fixtures prior to his arrival.

Key Stat: Victory in their most recent La Liga away game halted an eight game drought away from home for Granada. However, Nazaries are still leaking too many goals on their travels, conceding multiple times in four of the past five said fixtures (W1 L4).

Sevilla Vs Granada Betting Advice

At around 2/5 to collect their first La Liga win since edging the Seville derby 2-1 against Real Betis on 27 February, going four La Liga outings since without registering maximum points, there are undoubtedly more appealing betting propositions around this weekend than fourth-placed Sevilla beating fifth-from-bottom Granada. Particularly as they are coming up against a seemingly rejuvenated opponent desperate for points.

Sevilla Vs Granada – Key Facts:

  • Friday’s meeting will be the fifth held in Seville in La Liga between the clubs. Sevilla lead this particular head-to-head by three wins to one, winning each of the last three such contests whilst scoring exactly two goals each time.
  • However, our hosts are struggling for form right now. A 1-0 loss last time out in Barcelona marked their fourth consecutive winless league outing (D3 L1), winning two of the last ten (W2 D7 L1).
  • Granada also arrive with a modicum of form. The side currently 17th are unbeaten in two (W1 D1), scoring more in these outings (5) than in their ten prior league games.

Whoever comes out on top at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, we can expect the margin to be minimal. Just one Sevilla home league game in the last nine were settled by more than one goal, winning four by a single goal, one by two goals and drawing the other four. Moreover, last week’s loss in Barcelona made it one goal scored in four league games. Granada therefore, unbeaten in two (W1 D1), can hopefully cover the handicap for us.
