Sevilla Preview – Los Palanganas to stretch lengthy unbeaten run?

Due to the club’s successful exploits in Europe last season, in which they toppled Man Utd and Inter Milan in the process of capturing a sixth UEFA Cup/Europa League, Sevilla wouldn’t get their 2020/21 league campaign underway until last weekend – a full two games later than most. And while it wasn’t necessarily the most convincing of wins, the Andalusians did pick up all three points at the first time of asking on Sunday.

Victory in Cadiz, overcoming the newly-promoted side 3-1, came just three days after losing the UEFA Super Cup to Bayern Munich in extra-time. Therefore, it was hardly surprising Sunday’s performance wasn’t as polished as Julen Lopetegui would have liked. Sevilla, in the end though, did enough to merit maximum points (xG: CAD 1.37 – 2.81 SEV) but were ultimately indebted to a couple of very late strikes.

With merely four days between their next two fixtures, there isn’t a huge amount of time for recovery – particularly with them in action again at the Camp Nou in three days time. Victory here would be an ideal buffer ahead of Sunday, and they are deservedly favourites to do just that having won each of their last three league games at home, all ‘to nil’, as part of a 16-game (W9 D7) unbeaten streak in La Liga.

Levante Preview – A typically gung-ho effort expected?

Paco Lopez’s Levante were among the most entertaining outfits to follow in La Liga last term; goals flying in at both ends felt like the norm even if it did ‘only’ occur across 61 per cent of their 38 league games. That particular metric was still the fourth-highest in the division, and it is a trend that hasn’t bucked so far, seeing both league games to date produce goals for both them and their opposition.

Sunday’s come-from-behind win in Osasuna, winning 3-1 at El Sadar (xG: OSA 0.88 – 3.42 LEV) courtesy of goals from Gonzalo Melero, Roger and Jose Luis Morales, was the perfect response meanwhile to losing a pulsating affair away to neighbouring Valencia. The latter of those mentioned, club captain Morales, scored in both encounters and now has three for the season having twice put his team ahead in the 4-2 defeat at the Mestalla.

Attentions switch to Sevilla and their Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, a ground which has plagued Levante for a long time. El Granotas (The Frogs) last winning there in 2014, in what remains their sole victory across twelve visits in La Liga (W1 D4 L7). Moreover, they’ve not even managed a goal in the last three, with last season’s 1-0 loss one of only six instances whereby they failed to net in an away league outing.

Sevilla Vs Levante Betting Advice

With Sunday’s daunting trip to Barcelona in the back of their minds, you sense Sevilla need the added security of another three points here. It is unlikely to be easy even if their recent record – with three wins from five league and cup meetings over the past two seasons – suggests otherwise. That is because Levante arrive on a high after netting three in victory away to Osasuna last time out.

Sevilla Vs Levante – Key Facts

  • 9 February 2020 was the last time Sevilla lost a match in La Liga, winning nine of sixteen subsequent fixtures in the competition since a 2-1 loss away to Celta Vigo.
  • Zero points was the grand sum of Levante‘s efforts away to last season’s top-six teams, though they did at least manage to score past all but one: Sevilla (1-0).
  • A 1-1 draw at Levantes Ciutat de Valencia stadium on 15 Jun ended the run of four successive head-to-head victories for Sevilla in league and cup.

Sevilla were also victorious this past weekend, leaving it very late though to dispatch of Cadiz. A more accomplished performance is expected here: they lost only twice at home throughout the whole of 2019/20 (W10 D7 L2) with eight of ten victories coming by way of a clean sheet. Levante can swing it with the best, though, and did score away at all but one of last season’s top six – the 1-0 loss to Sevilla the only exception. 2-1 Sevilla.
