Sheffield United Vs Norwich City

Saturday, 7 March 2020 – 15:00 (GMT) Kick-Off
English Premier League
Pick: Sheffield United to WIN
Odds: 7/10

(All betting odds displayed were correct at time of writing: 4 March 2020 at 13:30 GMT)

Preview: Promoted from the EFL Championship together, with Norwich City doing so as champions, there is zero prospect of them returning to England’s second tier in unison. Sheffield United are all-but assured of safety and another three points here, at home to the league’s bottom side, would be another step towards realising their dream of European football.

Sheffield United Preview – Victory a must in their push for Europe?

Last week Sheffield United (8th – W10 D10 L7) were among four teams exempt from Premier League commitments due to their fixture with Aston Villa requiring rescheduling, as it coincided with the latter’s EFL Cup Final involvement. Chris Wilder won’t have been best pleased as he wasn’t exactly a huge fan of the recent winter break disrupting his team’s momentum, either. However, there must have been a wry smile across the manager’s face upon glancing through the various results that same weekend.

Perhaps fresher for their lack of competitive involvement (although some first-team members would feature in Tuesday’s FA Cup win at Reading), there is also an argument that United approach the weekend’s fixture from a position of strength. Several of their top-half rivals dropped points last time around, leaving the Blades with an eminently winnable game in hand over fifth-placed Man Utd (2 points in front) and Chelsea in fourth (5 points).

Win all their games between now and the end of May and this club will be strutting its stuff across Europe next season. They’re obviously not going to win every game, but we can rest assured Wilder will be stressing the importance of securing three points this weekend. In the reverse fixture, Sheffield United ran out 2-1 winners away from home to make it three wins in four head-to-head encounters. Meanwhile the only team to have beaten them at Bramall Lane since early December were Man City (W3 D2 L1).

Norwich City Preview – The start of a Canaries great escape?

It was a depleted gameweek last week, but that didn’t detract from what was an enthralling set of fixtures in the Premier League. And, in fairness to Norwich City, it was Daniel Farke’s men who got the wheels of chaos in motion. Yet few will have remembered their hard-earned 1-0 victory at home to Leicester City on Friday night, not once Liverpool were slayed at Vicarage Road and numerous other top sides suffered minor upsets and setbacks.

Jamal Lewis’ first goal in the English top-flight has ignited belief among supporters, though, as it was his smartly taken goal that earned Norwich just a fifth league win of the campaign last time out. No team has recorded fewer since the start of the season nor plundered less goals (25 in 28 games), while only Aston Villa have leaked more of them (51). Therefore it is difficult for anyone of a non-Norwich persuasion to get too excited about this team reeling in a six-point deficit between them and safety.

First and foremost, it is about winning the next game. Daniel Farke’s side haven’t managed successive league victories all season. While the last occasion the club achieved such a feat was April 2016. Just one away win all season – that at Everton in November – suggests another is improbable at Bramall Lane, but not impossible. Though they would need to score to have any chance, something The Canaries have managed only once across their last five away contests.

Sheffield United Vs Norwich City Betting Advice

The odds about a Sheffield United victory are not the most enticing. The Blades are a far more well-rounded outfit, however, whose levels of consistency this season put Norwich to shame, considering the latter were promoted ahead of United in last season’s Championship. On top of this, Chris Wilder’s side have the edge in this particular match-up with a 2-1 victory at Carrow Road earlier in the season their third win in the past four meetings.

Sheffield United Vs Norwich City – Key Facts

  • Only leaders Liverpool (20) have shipped fewer goals than Sheffield United (25) so far, who acquired eight of their ten victories in the league this season without conceding.
  • Norwich‘s tally of six away goals is at least five less than any other side in the Premier League. No team has won fewer games (1) away from home.
  • Three of the previous four head-to-head encounters were won by Sheffield United (W3 D1), who were 2-1 victors at Carrow Road earlier in the season and at Bramall Lane during the pair’s successful 2018-19 Championship campaign.

At home, Sheffield United are W6 D3 L5 compared to Norwich’s away record of W1 D3 L10. Bramall Lane has been an imposing venue for the lesser sides, with Aston Villa (W2-0), Bournemouth (W2-1), Brighton (1-1), Watford (1-1) and West Ham (W1-0) all failing to score more than once. Norwich, meanwhile, have netted the least amount of away goals in the division (6 in 14 outings). So if the hosts were to come unstuck, it will have to go down as a massive missed opportunity.
