Preview: At St Mary’s on Tuesday, hosts Southampton are presented with an opportunity of exorcising the demons of last season’s 6-0 defeat to Chelsea. The Blues, however, have won at this ground on all but one of the last seven Premier League visits.

Southampton – Not so saintly at St Mary’s?

Odds on the club being relegated this season were cut following a crushing 4-1 loss away to Tottenham in their opening game. However, since then they’ve responded encouragingly, taking four points from the next two games. Having staged a spirited fightback at home to Leeds, earning a point after being 2-0 down, they then went and produced a first win in the league for nine matches away at Leicester.

They weren’t capable of back to back victories though. Ralph Hasenhutl’s side going unrewarded for a display full of commitment and endeavour but lacking in attacking quality last time out against Manchester United, losing 1-0 at St Mary’s. That made it a sixth Premier League home defeat in eight (W1 D1), with the United game one of only two occasions during this run in which the Saints’ didn’t concede at least twice.

Key Stat: On Saturday, Southampton failed to score in a home Premier League game for only the second time in their last 18 outings at St Mary’s Stadium.

Chelsea – Sterling addition already paying off?

Raheem Sterling’s first goals in Chelsea colours were enough to see off Leicester City over the weekend and handed Thomas Tuchel’s men their second victory of 2022-23. It had to be achieved the hard way, though, forced to play more than hour a man light once Conor Gallagher – making just his second start for the club, with his first coming in that humbling 3-0 loss away to Leeds the previous week – was sent off.

That was a second red card shown to a Chelsea player in as many matches, after Kalidou Koulibaly was dismissed in that embarrassing display at Elland Road. Having dropped points in three of their five prior away league outings, any further ill-discipline could hamper efforts at St Mary’s. Where they’ve enjoyed themselves in recent times, winning six of the last seven here including a 6-0 rout in March of last season.

Key Stat: Chelsea have only managed one clean sheet from four games so far this season. They’ve now prevented the opposing team from scoring in only two of the past ten league games, having kept a clean sheet in six of the previous nine before this.

Southampton Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

Last season Chelsea would do the double over Southampton in the Premier League, scoring nine and conceding only one – a James Ward Prowse penalty in a 3-1 success at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile here at St Mary’s, the Blues made it six away wins in seven against their opponents, scoring six unanswered goals from 22 shots (12 on target) in a 6-0 drubbing. That, by the way, is a 150/1 chance on Tuesday.

Southampton Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Chelsea did the double over Southampton in 2022-23, winning these games by an aggregate score of 9-1. The Blues produced their sixth win across the last seven away renewals of this fixture courtesy of a 6-0 scoreline back in March.
  • Southampton lost for the sixth Premier League home game in eight (W1 D1) over the weekend, beaten 1-0 by Manchester United. That was just the second time in their past 18 home league games in which they didn’t score at least once.
  • Saturday’s 2-1 home win against Leicester City earned Chelsea their second Premier League away win in five games (D1 L2). Although that was their eighth league game in ten not keeping a clean sheet.

While I am not envisaging another rout of that proportion, it would nevertheless be a surprise were the visitors not to maintain their stranglehold on this fixture. Chelsea are short enough though, at around the 1/2 mark, and so it’s about boosting those odds. I am therefore keen to get Raheem Sterling on side. The winger registered his first club goals last time out and is already shaping as being his team’s main goal threat, having seen a couple more chalked off by VAR already this season.
