Preview: After Wilfried Zaha struck early in the reverse to hand Crystal Palace their first win over Southampton since 2018, the Eagles are now on the verge of completing their first league double over the Saints since 1990/91 should Roy Hodgson’s team oblige at St Mary’s.

Southampton – Sinking Saints need Ings back sharpish?

Saturday’s loss to Liverpool maintained the club’s wretched record at Anfield, losing on Merseyside for the fourth season running following a 2-0 scoreline, but also continued the team’s downward trajectory since the turn of the year. In 2021, no team in England’s top-flight has accumulated fewer points than Southampton (W10 D7 L17), winning just three of eighteen matches (D2 L13) during this timeframe.

It is also one clean sheet in seventeen league outings – that against bottom club Sheffield United in a routine 2-0 win at Bramall Lane – having conceded in each of their last seven home games at St Mary’s (W1 D2 L4). Yet that blank in front of goal against Liverpool was only their second in eight league games, with the Saints at least landing some blows of their own in these closing stages.

Southampton did carve out a number of presentable scoring opportunities last time, and one has to wonder whether Danny Ings would have put at least one of them away had he been available. Without their leading scorer in the side, the Saints are far less potent, so it will be interesting to see whether the striker recovers in time for Tuesday as manager Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to end a winless league run of four (D1 L3).

Crystal Palace – Eagles know their way to the goal?

It has been another solid if unspectacular campaign from Crystal Palace (W11 D8 L15) who, courtesy of their comfortable 2-0 victory away to Sheffield United on Saturday, can look forward to another season in the Premier League. Christian Benteke broke the deadlock with barely a minute of the game gone, before the exciting Ebere Ezi capped a dominant display from the Eagles with a late second.

This season, Palace have fared poorly in the final third, with some of their underlying numbers for shots in the box, shots on target and Expected Goals all ranking among the worst in the division. The team we saw at Bramall Lane on Saturday was almost unrecognisable, therefore, attempting 21 shots in all. Of these, eight were on target, with only some smart goalkeeping keeping the scoreline respectable

If Palace are capable of reproducing a similar performance at St Mary’s, where their hosts are without a clean sheet in seven league games, there could be some joy to be had in this fixture. Roy Hodgson’s side were in poor form beforehand, losing three on the spin, but have now netted in five successive away matches (W2 D1 L2) including strikes at European hopefuls Everton, Leicester and Tottenham.

Southampton Vs Crystal Palace Betting Advice

None of the last five league meetings has produced more than two goals, with this season’s reverse fixture settled by Wilfried Zaha as Crystal Palace picked up a 1-0 win – their first against the Saints since 2018. However, the last four encounters between these sides at St Mary’s finished with neither keeping their clean sheet intact, and this bet could be worth taking another chance on.

Southampton Vs Crystal Palace – Key Facts:

  • Crystal Palace have only managed one win in their previous five top-flight meetings with Southampton, although this was in the most recent – a 1-0 victory at Selhurst Park last September.
  • The past four Premier League games at St Mary’s between these sides produced both teams scoring, the last two of those producing 1-1 stalemates.
  • Each of the last five Southampton home games has seen them score and concede, which was also the case in five of the past seven away games involving Crystal Palace.

Southampton’s last five home games saw both teams find the net, while the same occurred in five of the last seven away matches for Crystal Palace, who were excellent in attack last time out and will be aiming to score for the sixth consecutive Premier League away game here. Moreover, with neither side at risk of relegation, we could see two teams playing with greater freedom in these remaining matches.
