Preview: With three wins from their last four respective home and away matches, Southampton and Leeds will meet at St Mary’s in the penultimate round of the 2020/21 Premier League season in confident mood. It was Leeds, however, who emerged 3-0 victors after the pair’s first meeting of the season.

Southampton – Encouragement for Saints in closing stages?

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side come into their final Premier League home game unbeaten in four here at St Mary’s following Saturday’s relatively straightforward 3-1 victory over Fulham. Their second win at home by that scoreline in quick succession, having dispatched Crystal Palace four days earlier with a similar degree of aplomb. Giving them ten points from the last twelve available down on the South Coast.

Conversely, the Saints (W12 D7 L17) have lost nine of the last ten away from home. They visit West Ham on the final day. The Hammers likely needing three points to confirm their place in Europe next season, and so Tuesday’s visit from Leeds – without a win at St Mary’s across their previous three competitive games (L3) – represents an outstanding opportunity to build on their positive momentum going into Sunday.

Southampton have claimed seven points from their last four matches (W2 D1 L1) – one shy of the figure amassed in the seventeen league outings prior (W2 D1 L14). It serves to highlight the stark turnaround in fortunes. Meanwhile, the last time they recorded three consecutive top-flight home wins was also in the month of May, back in 2016 during the latter stages of the Ronald Koeman reign.

Leeds – Bielsa eyeing top-half finish?

Saturday’s emphatic 4-0 victory at Turf Moor over Burnley has Leeds (W16 D5 L15) on the cusp of their first top-half finish in the Premier League since 2001/02. A win on Tuesday, away to resurgent Southampton, would ensure they can finish no lower than tenth whilst also seeing them climb above Arsenal into ninth. Few would dare back against them either on the evidence of their recent performances.

That win made it one defeat in their last nine league games (W5 D3). Away from home it is three wins from four, with 2-1 wins over Fulham and even champions Man City only offset by a 2-0 loss in Brighton. Interestingly, the Whites have now scored two or more (8) or none at all (4) across their previous twelve away matches, while they remain the only top-flight side yet to play out a draw this season (W9 L9).

Perhaps the only real concern for manager Marcelo Bielsa is the deteriorating form of top scorer Patrick Bamford. Just five players this season have scored more than the 15 of the former Chelsea starlet, however, only two have come in Leeds’ last nine games and he was hauled off before the hour against Burnley. Moreover his replacement, Rodrigo, netted twice to stake a claim for a starting berth at St Mary’s.

Southampton Vs Leeds Betting Advice

With both finishing the season strongly, we should be treated to a very enjoyable contest at St Mary’s. Leeds’ record here isn’t the best, losing on each of their previous three visits in all competitions, but none were recent with Leeds cruising to a 3-0 victory when these sides met at Elland Road earlier in the campaign. With one loss in nine (W5 D3) and three wins from their last four away, the visitors hold solid claims.

Southampton Vs Leeds – Key Facts:

  • Only one of the previous eight competitive matches between these teams featured both teams scoring, with Leeds 3-0 winners at Elland Road earlier in the campaign.
  • Both teams are in confident scoring form however. Southampton scoring exactly three in all but one of the last four at home (W3 D1) and Leeds netting two or more in three of their last four away (W3 L1).
  • Each of the last seven Southampton home games saw them score as well as concede, with five producing Over 2.5 Goals to go with it.

That above mentioned form actually means Southampton are the slight outsiders, despite winning their last two matches – scoring exactly three in each – and being unbeaten in four at home (W2 D1 L1). I’m more interested in goals, though. Each of the last seven at St Mary’s has seen both teams score. This bet has landed only twice in Leeds’ last six on the road although their strike rate for the season stands at 50%.
