Manchester City excellent in their midweek win over Liverpool but Southampton have had some extra rest and will be hoping to get back to winning ways at home.

Southampton Preview – Can Saints register a rare home success to boost chances of a top-half finish?

Many clubs, and their players, will be envious of Southampton due to the fact that the Saints will have had a full week to prepare for this game. It’s an unusual position to be in during the current climate when the games are coming thick and fast. That extra rest between matches will have given Ralph Hassenhuttl the opportunity to work and train his team properly ahead of this one.

And there’s no doubt that if Southampton needed some extra preparation then it’s for a home game against Manchester City. Their form at St Mary’s this season has been very poor (worst in the league) and they have lost their last six against this opponent in the league, and seven in all competitions.

The above indicates a slightly negative outlook for Southampton but it has been a very good second half to the campaign. And the majority of that comes from their excellent away performances. Last weekend’s win away to Watford was their eighth away success of the Premier League campaign which is bettered only by City and Liverpool.

There’s no doubting who has been their star player, either, with a rejuvenated Danny Ings netting a double last week to take his personal tally to 18 for the season. He will have his eyes on the Golden Boot.

Manchester City Preview – Are classy City going to build on impressive midweek win?

Some City supporters will feel Thursday’s 4-0 win against Liverpool has put a few things right after what has been a very disappointing league campaign for Pep Guardiola’s men. It’s easy to see why, too, considering they were excellent in the match but other than serve as a reminder of how good this team can be, it counts for very little in the grand scheme of things. City will still finish second and it will be a distant second.

Guardiola will have his sights set on a continuing to pick up league wins in impressive fashion whilst setting his team up for an assault on the FA Cup and Champions League.

This is the first of four games before the semi-final against Arsenal where they will again be big favourites to progress to yet another domestic cup final. With dates also set for the return of European fixtures then the real action is only really beginning for City.

To give you an indication of how inconsistent City have been this season, the 30 points they have dropped so far is equal to the total dropped points of their two title-winning campaigns in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Southampton vs Manchester City Betting Advice

If Southampton are to get the better of City then you would think this may be an opportunity for them. The fact they have had a full week to prepare, in addition to City not always being at their formidable best and with little to play for in terms of the league.

However, they need only look at Thursday’s game and be instantly reminded of how good their opponents are. Plus their own issues with playing at home.

Key Facts – Southampton vs Manchester City Betting Tip

  • It’s just two wins in nine home games four Southampton, in stark contrast to their impressive away form
  • City put four past champions Liverpool on Thursday and were at their scintillating best
  • Manchester City have won the last seven games against Southampton, scoring 20 goals in the process

Saints have scored in both meetings against City this season (one in the League Cup) and have failed to score in just two of their last seven against Guardiola’s men. We also know City’s style of play will give the opponent chances and have conceded in 10 of their Premier League away games this season the prospect of both teams scoring is strong.
