Southampton Preview – Will Saints continue good form and extend their unbeaten run to seven games?

Being the final game of the season it’s normal to look back on what’s been and Southampton will look at their own campaign in two halves. The first – up until the beginning of November – was horrific including the 9-0 home loss against Leicester. Beyond that, they have been very good in the main and even better since the resumption. Saints come into this game knowing they will be in the bottom half regardless but can still finish 11th.

Ralph Hasenhuttl deserves a lot of credit for turning things around when many doubted his ways and it would appear that Saints fans have a lot to look forward to for the seasons to come

The one area where Southampton will have to improve is at home where they have struggled throughout the season. The 1-0 win over Manchester City recently is very much an outlier having managed just four more wins at St Mary’s across the season. Considering how good they are on the road then if they can fix that then a top eight finish in future is well within their reach.

In terms of individuals, Danny Ings can still finish with the golden boot. He requires two goals to go level with Jamie Vardy and three to win it outright. Aside from that, it’s been a tremendous return to form for the former Liverpool striker.

Sheffield United Preview – Can Wilder help his team bounce back from recent disappointments to secure eighth spot?

Few could have predicted the season Sheffield United would have when they won promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 12 years. So many of their team – and coaching staff – were competing at this level for the first time. You’d never have known as the Blades have been in and around the top eight for the majority of the campaign.

They were still being talked about as potential top four contenders in the games immediately after Project Restart only to fall short.

The improvement of some of the traditional top teams in recent weeks combined with a couple of underwhelming performances from Wilder’s men mean that a top seven finish and qualifying for the Europa League is outwith United’s reach now but there’s no doubt that they will be targeting eighth.

Level on points with Burnley and one ahead of Arsenal means they will have to get something here in order to do that. Whilst it’s been an excellent season overall, there would be some disappointment if they were to drop to 10th.

Southampton vs Sheffield United Betting Advice

Sheffield United were one of the few teams that Southampton were able to beat in the earlier part of the season and will be hoping to follow that up with another three points here. It would cap an excellent period since the resumption where they have lost just once. Their visitors will be hoping to bounce back from two poor performances by their own standards where they have lost both and failed to score in either.

Key Facts – Southampton vs Sheffield United Betting Tip

  • Southampton are unbeaten in their last six games and can finish two points behind Sheffield United with a win
  • European qualification is beyond the Blades following to consecutive defeats against Leicester and Everton
  • The Saints are looking to do the double over Sheffield United having won 1-0 at Bramall Lane

It’s always difficult to go against a team who have been so good who are extremely resolute as Sheffield United are but Southampton are in rude form at the moment. Whilst better on the road, the win against City showed they are more than capable at home and they can finish with victory here.
