Preview: Last season’s fifth and eight place finishers, St Pauli and Nurnberg respectively, from Germany’s Bundesliga 2 get their campaigns underway against each other. The sides couldn’t be separated here at Millerntor-Stadium in April, the visitors rescuing a 1-1 draw courtesy of a late leveller.

St. Pauli – Kult Klub out to better last season’s fifth place finish?

Having flirted with the idea of promotion for much of last season, St. Pauli will be aiming to seal the deal for good in 2022-23 in an effort to return the club to the Bundesliga for the first time in more than a decade. Top of the standings at the midway stage last time round, when, by early December, they had already won 11 of 17 second tier matches, the club from Hamburg will be keen to replicate last season’s rapier start.

They’ve kept faith in coach Timo Schultz, and for good reason. A fifth place finish last term represented their best campaign since 2016, when they were fourth, even if his charges would ultimately run out of steam down the home stretch. Winning only one of their final seven encounters (D3 L3). However they were Bundesliga 2’s most consistent home team, tallying more points (37) and wins (11 – the only side to do so).

Key Stat: St. Pauli begun the 2021-22 Bundesliga 2 campaign by scoring two or more in ten consecutive home matches, winning the first eight of these fixtures. They wouldn’t incur their first loss at Millerntor-Stadion until February.

Nurnberg – All change as Der Club aim to break free from mid-table?

A steady start last season, in which they opened their Bundesliga 2 accounts with an 11-game unbeaten run that last through to the end of October, preceded a rocky middle and borderline disastrous finish. Nurnberg would eventually settle on eighth, though one wonders – and, in particular, their 37-year-old manager Robert Klauss – what might have been had they toiled to one win from eight to close out the season.

The club have been among the more active this summer though, with plenty of first-team upheaval. Patience may therefore be required before this new-look team finds the cohesion needed to perform consistently. Der Club (The Club) would often rise to the occasion on their travels, however, taking points from visits to Bremen, Hamburg, Paderborn and St. Pauli – four out of seven sides which finished above them.

Key Stat: Nurnberg only failed to score in 18% of their Bundesliga 2 away games in 2021-22 (3 of 17 away games). They scored two or more on seven occasions away from home.

St. Pauli Vs Nurnberg Betting Advice

All of the four previous head-to-heads failed to produce a single clean sheet, while last season’s corresponding fixture, here at St. Pauli’s Millerntor-Stadion, marked the only meeting across the past two seasons not to feature at least three goals. So, there is every chance we could be treated to a goal-laced encounter between two teams harbouring genuine promotion aspirations for the season ahead.

Chelsea Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Not since 2016 has Nurnberg celebrated a win in a competitive fixture versus St. Pauli, the former currently enjoying a 10-match unbeaten sequence (W5 D5) in this fixture.
  • All but one of five previous meetings between the teams here at Millerntor-Stadion, however, ended without a winner. The last two, meanwhile, produced score draws.
  • Last season though, no team from the German second tier could better St. Pauli’s points return at home (37 from 17 games – W11 D4 L2). Meanwhile a return of 24 away points (W6 D6 L5), while by no means a poor effort, placed Nurnberg eighth of Bundesliga 2 clubs.

With it being the first game, and with there being several new faces on show in both camps, playing the percentages and backing the draw does make sense. Not least when looking at the side’s previous meetings in Hamburg, where St. Pauli are based. Just one of the past five clashes with St. Pauli as the hosts yielded a decisive outcome, seeing the last two such encounters end with scoring draws (1-1 and 2-2).
