Two former Grand Slam champions meet up in the first round of the 2020 French Open. So it’s a mouthwatering clash between Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray.

This is the final match on Court Philippe Chatrier on Sunday which is likely to be after 5.00 pm some time.

Andy Murray maked his return to the French Open for the first time in 2017 when he lost to the Swiss star in the final four.

Stan Wawrinka Preview – Wawrinka the favourite for first round clash

Switzerland star Stan Wawirkina didn’t play at the US Open, but he has had a little time on clay this season.

He took part in the ATP Rome 1000 Masters tournament earlier this month, but he was dumped out in the first round by Lorenzo Musetti in a shock result.

Wawrinka claimed the 2015 French Open title and his record since then has been a semi-final, Final, first round and quarter-final.

He’s a reasonable 1/3 odds-on favourite for this and earlier this year he went to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

The 35-year-old is on a W8 L4 record for this fragmented season. Interestingly a big chunk of that winning form has been on clay.

Wawrinka claimed the title in Prague back in August, albeit in a lower-tier event and not meeting a seeded player along the way.

It was just good, positive match time on clay for him.

This will be the first meeting between the two players since Antwerp last year, a match which was won by Murray in three sets.

Wawrinka’s overall record against Andy Murray is W8 L12 and he has dropped the last two.

The Swiss star is a bit of a specialist on the clay court, however, but just while his form isn’t quite there a 3-1 option on Wawrinka in set betting is at 11/4 odds* (odds taken 23:15 GMT on Saturday, 26th September).

Andy Murray Preview – Can Murray prevail in France?

Andy Murray did go to the US Open and he won his opener, which was a good experience for him.

He was two sets down in that opener at Flushing Meadows to Yoshihito Nishioka but managed to turn around somehow.

It took a lot out of him, however, did that five-set duel and he wasn’t able to offer up much resistance against Felix Auger Aliassime in the second round.

No-one is realistically expecting Murray to win this Grand Slam but it’s just part of the journey back for him.

It was in his semi-final match against Wawrinka at the 2017 French Open that Murray first really noticed the problem with his hip that forced him into surgeries and time away from the game.

In the match outright for Sunday’s first round match, Murray is a 12/5 underdog, which may have some appeal to punters who fancy a flutter on him* (odds taken 23:15 GMT on Saturday, 26th September).

Most of the recent head to head form has actually gone his way.

Andy Murray has won four of the last five meetings between the two players, but the one he dropped there was in that gruelling five-set duel with Wawrinka at Roland Garros in 2017.

But also in that run was a win at the French Open for Andy Murray in the 2016 semi final.

So these two stalwarts of the game know each other pretty well, but the current standing of the two has to be taken into consideration.

Even through this strange year for the tennis schedule, Murray has had far less time in action than Wawrinka has had.

Meeting a clay specialist in the first round, and a fellow former Slam winner as well, isn’t going to be easy for the Brit.

Stan Wawrinka vs Andy Murray Betting Advice

We have to swing with Wawrinka collecting the victory in this one as he knows his way around the clay at the highest level.

Even though the most recent head to head form that there is, is in favour of Murray, in a best of five match, that should send more favouritism to Wawrinka.

He’s more likely to outlast the trial than Murray is if the fixture gets extended beyond three sets.

Key Facts – Stan Wawrinka vs Andy Murray Betting Tip

  • Stan Wawrinka lost in the first round of the recent ATP Rome event on clay
  • Stan Wawrinka won the last French Open meeting
  • Andy Murray has won four of the last five meetings with Wawrinka

The Wawrinka 3-1 set betting has the most appeal for us because it’s reasonable enough between the two veterans that Murray could get an early set on the board.

That 3-1 Wawrinka option in set betting is at 11/4*(odds taken 23:15 GMT on Saturday, 26th September).

Anything swinging the way of Murray is just worth backing him to get the job done in the match outright, someway, somehow.
