America’s Tennys Sandgren has made his second Grand Slam quarterfinal. He made it through after upsetting world number 12 Fabio Fognini in the fourth round.
That’s two seeds has accounted for so far at the tournament. Now he goes up against the legend that is Roger Federer for a place in the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.

28-year-old Tennys Sandgren is ranked 100 in the world. After five straight failed qualification campaigns at the Australian Open, he made it the main draw for the first time in 2018 and ran through to the quarter-finals. Last year he was a first-round loser. So he is definitely punching above his weight again in what has been an exciting run from him.
In the second round, he took out world number eight Matteo Berrettini in an epic five-set encounter, winning the decider 7-5. Then in the fourth round, he was up against world number 12 Fabio Fongigi and got through in four sets. Three of the four sets in that match were decided by a tie break. Sandgren has one career ATP title which was in Auckland last year. He’s been dynamic, powerful and has shown some improvised grace too.
Federer faces the unknown in Sandgren
This will be Roger Federer’s first match against Sandgren. Then is a ten year age difference between the two players. After his narrow escape in the third round against John Millman, in which Federer looked down and out in the super tie-break at the end of the fifth set, things were a little more routine for him in the fourth round.
Federer took on Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in the last round. Granted after his four-hour epic against Millman, Federer was a bit slow out of the blocks and dropped the first set. Maybe it was excusable, but as the legend does, he brushes it all aside without getting flustered.

Federer then ran through to close out the match by winning the next three sets on the bounce, dropping just five games. The 20-time Grand Slam champion was back into top gear and moved through without a hitch in the end. On paper, this is a superbly favourable draw for Federer. It means that he could make the semi-finals without having faced another seeded player.
