Tottenham – Jose’s unbeaten record at risk?

Any hope of a return to the Champions League may depend solely on winning this season’s Europa League, because the league table makes for ominous reading following last week’s 2-1 loss away to London rivals West Ham. Spurs (W10 D6 L8) slipped to ninth – seven points behind fifth-placed Chelsea who are two points worse off than The Hammers in fourth, having fully merited their win at the London Stadium.

It leaves Jose Mourinho with plenty to ponder ahead of welcoming resurgent Burnley to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Portuguese manager has an excellent record versus the Clarets, against whom he has racked up more games without ever losing (10 – W6 D4) than he has any other opponent during his illustrious managerial career. Overseeing a 1-0 victory – a hard-fought one at that – at Turf Moor in October.

Mourinho’s men come into Sunday’s contest on the back of five defeats in six league games. Three of those to nil, netting just five times during this sequence, while their only cause for celebration was a routine victory over 19th-placed West Brom. In fact, Spurs’ ten league wins this term have come against sides with an averaging starting position of 15th – the exact position Burnley begun the weekend in.

Burnley – Clarets enjoying their capital jaunts?

Slowly but surely Burnley (W7 D7 L11) are inching towards renewing their membership into a sixth consecutive term among England’s elite. The club closer to the top-ten (7 points) than they are relegation (8) after stringing together four games unbeaten, earning low-scoring home draws with all of Brighton, Fulham and West Brom while thrashing Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park in their latest away assignment.

The latter seen them produce arguably their most accomplished performance of the entire season. Burnley have now won four of their last six away Premier League games in London, with two of those (away vs Palace and Arsenal) coming during the current campaign – only twice before have they claimed more in the same season. However, their last win away to Tottenham dates back to 1974 (D1 L6 since).

If the Clarets have excelled on the road of late, notably becoming the first team to beat champions Liverpool at Anfield in January, then their form at Turf Moor has been a lot less subdued. Failing to beat Fulham and ten-man West Brom in back-to-back home matches since their impressive victory over Palace, having scored more in that one outing than in their previous four home games combined.

Tottenham Vs Burnley Betting Advice

The history certainly does not favour the visitors. Since their last away victory in this fixture, in 1974, Burnley have succumbed to six defeat in seven away meetings with Tottenham, who cruised to a 5-0 scoreline in last season’s corresponding fixture in North London. Spurs would also claim a battling 1-0 win at Turf Moor last October. On this basis, then, slim odds available on a home win vaguely make sense.

Tottenham Vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • Five defeats in six Premier League games for Tottenham coming into Sunday’s contest in North London, where they are unbeaten versus Burnley since 1974 (W6 D1 thereafter).
  • Burnley have won two of their past three away Premier League games (L1) – at Liverpool and Crystal Palace – and are enjoying a four-game unbeaten run (W1 D3), home and away.
  • With 48 goals, no Premier League team’s fixtures in 2020/21 have produced fewer goals than that of Burnley. Eight of their twelve away matches going Under 2.5 Goals.

Anyone tucking into such a short price about a Spurs victory are placing the utmost faith in their record in this fixture holding up, because the respective recent form suggests this could be a much closer affair than the one which took place in North London last term. Burnley are unbeaten in four (W1 D3), conceding only twice, whereas Spurs have five defeats in six having scored only five goals.
